#1 The sermon Father Kelly gave was directed toward the men’s upcoming landing in Japanese-held territory. The lads seemed to be relaxed and in high spirits, despite the facts of full stomachs and clear hot sunlight.
#2 The troops were relaxed, despite the fact that they probably knew where they were going and what might happen there. They had been wondering where they were going for so long that they had already exhausted all possible guesses.
#3 The fleet had gathered around us, and we were one of the largest and strongest groups of war vessels ever assembled. The thought that we were going into our adventure with weight and power behind us was encouraging.
#4 The troops that were going to be near the action were not going to take part in the assault on Japanese-held territory. The remaining troops were going to go on a mission that was much less dramatic and would not involve contact with the enemy.

The flagship was clogged with marine officers anxious to get their orders and settle their plans. I managed to get the consent of Admiral Turner to move to another transport. The ship was an old, decrepit horror with no modern apparatus for pumping water. The marines were unkempt and looked like gypsies, but they would fight.
#6
The Australian officer finished his speech. The marine officers were not pleased with the terrain they would have to take. But instead of complaining, they turned to a discussion of methods to cross the river.
#7
I heard the men complaining about their food and the lack of water. I asked a marine about the matter,
