ONE OF PAUL WISEMAN’S “World War II Today” dispatches in your April issue described how underwater volcanic activity had recently raised Iwo Jima’s sunken Japanese vessels, scuttled off the coast by the U.S. Navy in 1945 following the island’s capture. This wasn’t the first time I’ve seen these “Ghost Ships” ascend from the sea. They were at the island’s so-called “Shipwreck Beach” when I reported aboard the U.S. Coast Guard LORAN [Long Range Aid to Navigation] station on Iwo Jima as a boot in 1982. As a World War II buff, Iwo was a dream assignment—plenty of caves to explore, and even in 1982, lots of war relics.
