Peary was a draftsman with the Coast and Geodetic Survey in Washington, D. C. He was assigned to make a survey of Fryeburg, his first real job. He grew weary of the realities of his job, which entailed endless hours of lettering practice in a windowless office. He wanted to do something more exciting.
