Captain’s log ... India to Durban

LIVES were measured as profit, with babies of Indian indentured labourers born on board ships being welcomed by ships’ captains – because they could claim a bonus in payment for an extra “soul on board”.

This minutiae of life aboard these ships is detailed in the new coffee table book, The Indian Africans, by Paul David, Ranjith Choonilall, Kiru Naidoo and Selvan Pillay. David died recently, before his 80th birthday.
