Book Preview: #1 The two men were looking for a schooner that was small enough to be handled by four sailors, but strongly built as well. They wanted the ship to be cheap, since they had little funding for the ambitious venture they planned.
#2 The two men, François Raynal and Thomas Musgrave, were looking for a ship to take them on their adventure. They found the Grafton, a coal schooner, and fell in love with her. She was the ideal ship for their adventure.
#3 The Grafton was adapted for the journey to Campbell Island. The first priority was to prepare her for the tremendous seas she would be surfing by adding weight to her hull. Then, three hundred pounds of ship’s bread, two barrels of salt pork, twenty gallons of molasses, a barrel of salt beef, and a few small cartons of sugar and butter were loaded.
#4 The Grafton finally set sail, with Musgrave as captain, two seamen, a cook, and a fifth crew member, a Portuguese man named Henry Forgès, who claimed that his name was Brown. However, it didn’t take long for Musgrave to find that this was completely untrue.
