The action moves out of the prison, and much like the second season of the TV show "Prison Break," the plot sort of flounders outside those confining walls. And just as I was feeling that the racial equivalencies of some of the monster groups was starting to tip toward the uncomfortable, the author must have been getting similar feedback because he actually includes an essay about the subject as an afterword.

This volume was a disappointing change of the premise, but Season Three promises a return to prison, so I might give it a go to see if the things get back on track.
