#1 The business you are in is the business of living, and the sooner you learn who you are and how you became the person you are, the sooner you will be able to deal with any challenges that may have frustrated your success up to now.
#2 X’s anxiety began to subside as he regained consciousness. He was most interested in figuring out whether or not the people would accept him once he was able to move about freely among them. He evaluated the woman’s behavior for clues as to whether he would be liked, whether he would be found personable and attractive, and whether he would elicit sympathy and interest.
#3 X learned the language, and he and the woman developed a close bond. He began to understand her better, and he learned how love was expressed in this culture. He tried to imitate them, for he realized that it was their loving behavior that meant the difference between life and death for him.
#4 X had been with the couple for about four years when he began to wonder if he would have to resort to violence to get the man out of the way. He realized that the man was more powerful than him, and that he might be able to divine his intentions. He decided to become more like the man.

#1
The business you are in is the business of living, and the sooner you learn who you are and how you became the person you are, the sooner you will be able to deal with any challenges that may have frustrated your success up to now.
#2
X’s anxiety began to subside as he regained consciousness. He was most interested in figuring out whether or not the people would accept him once he was able to move about freely among them. He evaluated the woman’s behavior for clues as to whether he would be liked, whether he would be found personable and attractive, and whether he would elicit sympathy and interest.
#3
X learned the language, and he and the woman developed a close bond. He began to understand her better, and he learned how love was expressed in this culture. He tried to imitate them, for he realized that it was their loving behavior that meant the difference between life and death for him.
#4
X had been with the couple for about four years when he began to wonder if he would have to resort to violence to get the man out of the way. He realized that the man was more powerful than him, and that he might be able to divine his intentions. He decided to become more like the man.
#5
X had a very difficult time leaving his old home and the people he had grown to love over the years. The stirrings within him that had caused his rebelliousness were the promptings of knowledge that he must turn outward and leave this home.
#6
There are two main criteria of success: do others think you are a success, and do you think so. These are related as the straw is related to the ice cream soda. If you want to fully enjoy an ice-cream soda, you must have both the ice cream and the ice cream soda.
#7
The most successful people are those who have their own personal values stemming from a mature philosophy. They are not affected by outward signs or appearances, but only by intangible personal values.
#8
Success is not easy. It requires purpose, and it is not all of a piece. It has its upturns and valleys, just like a batting average. A successful life will have its days of failure, just like any other life.
#9
The fourth essential ingredient of success is satisfaction. Without it, success is not success. One man's meat may be another man's poison, and so satisfaction to one man may stem from the amassing of a fortune, while to another man it may come from the writing of a poem.
#10
Success must be enjoyed. It may be won with tears, but it must be crowned with laughter. Otherwise the effort may be worthwhile, but for the individual without the inner laughter, which is known by another name as satisfaction, there can hardly be success.
#11
The university’s greatest asset is the credentials of its faculty. In Lesson 1, you met Jo Coudert, who has edited many textbooks in the fields of psychiatry and medicine. Her book, Advice from a Failure, has been a constant best-seller since its publication in 1965.
#12
I used to worry a lot, but one spring day in 1934, I was walking down West Dougherty Street in Webb City when I saw a sight that banished all my worries. I met a man who had no legs, and I realized how rich I was. I had two legs, and I could walk.
#13
The words Think and Thank are inscribed in many of the Cromwellian churches of England. These words should be inscribed on our hearts, too: Think and Thank. Think about all the riches we have and thank God for all our boons and bounties.
#14
I once had to tremble on the edge of tragedy before I learned to be happy about what I had instead of worrying about what I lacked. I resolved to think only the thoughts I wanted to live by: thoughts of joy, happiness, health.
#15
Count your blessings each morning, and try not to take things for granted. The author Borghild Dahl learned how to enjoy life by counting her blessings, and she was eventually able to see again after half a century of blindness.
#16
If you want to stop worrying and start living, you must stop being so blind to the beauty all around you and start appreciating it.
#17
The Will to Live and the Will to Power are two phrases that represent the drives of the organism toward fulfillment and growth. However, the Will to Fail, the Will to Death, is not so easily accepted. It is a difficult concept to grasp, and it takes time to realize it.
#18
The Will to Fail is a reality. It is the arch-enemy of all that is good and effective in us. It is easy to see it for the black-hearted villain it is when it arrives out of its due time, but most of us are well within its power
