Be Your Own Astrologer - Dr. Bhojraj Dwivedi
Utility and Importance of Astrology
In Naardium Shastra, "Siddhant" (principle), "Sanhita" (collection of facts) and "Hora" are the three divisions of Astrology, which are said to be the pure eyes of pious Veda. From the ancient time of Panini the great, Astrology has been defined as one of the six divisions of the Veda, In the famous ancient book "Vedanga Jyotish", the author said that Astrology is the controller of time. Not only that, but it has also been said that one who knows Astrology knows about Yagyas (rituals). Out of the six Vedangas, Astrology has been described to be the apex (highest) of the wings of a peacock and the Mani
(gem emitting light) embedded in the head of the great Naga, the serpent.
Acknowledging the importance of time factor, an astrologer has been nomenclatured as knower of time,
knower of past, present and future
, and knower of all.
(omniscient). Saayanacharya in "Rigvedabhashyabhumika (ऋग्वेदभाष्यभूमिका) has written that the main purpose of Astrology is to reform the time of organised rites (यज्ञ). For an example, it has been mentioned,
lighten the fire in krittika constellation". Such a directive can’t be issued without the knowledge of Astrology, because Sun is the lord of krittika, which is the greatest sources and store of fire. Likewise we find in the Vedanga, "Get initiated in Ekastka, get initiated in the full-moon day of ‘Phalgun’ etc" has been mentioned in the Shrutis
of Vedanga.
Without having good knowledge of these shrutis of Veda, one can’t act properly. The ancient rhishis have put special emphasis on the study of Astrology, calling it to be a part of the Veda along with the studies of Vedos.
The farmers need the knowledge of Astrology most, because they want to know the time of rains and the time of sowing of seed. They want to know how the time will pass?
How the crops will grow etc? In Hindu way of life, all the sixteen Sanskaras
and "Yagyas" (षोडस संस्कार एंव यज्ञ हवन) is only done in definite time on selected Muhurta
astrologically, by lighting fire. Shruti says:
meaning thereby that those worships and Yagyas are deprived of God, deprived of offerings and deprived of constellation, which are not acted upon without fixing the proper astrological time for the purpose.
Astrology has been defined in different shastras in different manners and aspects of the formation of the word by ज्योतिष
analysing the parts of the word.

Origin of Astrology
It is not possible to give the correct time and date of the origin of Astrology but this much is a settled fact that Astrology is as old as the Vedas. Though the Veda is not a book on Astrology but there are many astrological facts and calculations in it, on which, the learned persons differ.
The rising and the setting of stars were marked in the Vedic age. There are many information and indications, which are found in "Taittiriya Brahman and Shatpath Brahman" (तैत्तिरीय ब्राह्मण एवं शतपथ ब्राह्मण). Lokmanya Tilak has estimated the age of the Rig Veda to be 4500 B.C. on page no. 18 of his book "Orayan" but Pandit Raghunandan Sharma has confirmed on the basis of sidereal spring (Vasant) of that the age of the Rig Veda is 22000 years B.C., giving facts and figures in the book "Vaidic Sampatti" (वैदिक सम्पति) The knowledge of Indian calculative Astrology and Vedh-Siddhanta
is obtained from the most ancient and authentic book titled Vedanga Jyotish
. Possibly, this book was written in 1200 B.C. Since then, till now, astrology is in practice.
Whatever religious rite is to be performed, must be performed on the astrologically selected time (मुहूर्त), otherwise it may not be counted as religious rite.
So it is a proven fact that the correct knowledge of time is not possible without Astrology. Without the knowledge of time factor (astrology) all the worships and rites (संस्कार) regarding Veda
, Smriti
, pregnancy, conception, birth, initiation (or start wearing sacred thread), marriage etc are useless like sowing seed on the waste land. Var (वार), constellation, yoga, etc are applied for the construction of ponds, wells, gardens, temples as also in the religious rites of Shradha,
Tarpan,
Vrata" and worship, business, entering new house etc. So the knowledge of Astrology for the success of all the Vedic and worldly affairs is essential.
All the "Shastras" are presumptive and controversial, but the science of Astrology is definite and concrete, which is witnessed by Sun and Moon. Eclipses of Sun and Moon, sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset, rising and setting of planets etc are the glaring examples of the exactness of this science.
Astronomy points out the good and bad period of the world. One who knows this celestial science attains renunciation after death and goes to the heaven and his soul is free from the bonds of life and death. No other science, other than Astrology, tends a man towards God and gives the guarantee of final renunciation. So this celestial science is great in itself.
Astrology is such an interesting subject that an astrologer happens to be surrounded by a large number of friends and well-wishers. An astrologer earns much wealth along with name and fame.
None can be a real friend to a person other than Astrology, because it helps in earning money, finding easy passage in the vast ocean of hindrance like a ship journeying in a turbulent sea. It is a good source to become popular. Varahmihira once said that one who knows this celestial science knows the time and space, can do the work which can not be done by one thousand elephants and four thousand horses. Without Astrology, Muhurta (selected time), Tithi, constellation, season and year will be bungled. Varahmihira in an introduction to his Brihatsamhita
says that a king can’t be dignified without an astrologer in his association and he will be groping in darkness in the complicated way of life and he is compared to a night without a "deep" (light emitted by a pot by burning oil) and the sky without Sun. So a king or a statesman must be associated with highly learned astrologer if the king aspires for victory, fame, wealth, pleasure and welfare.
There is one dark aspect of Astrology that as it went on becoming more and more popular and famous, some non- deserving persons entered this profession, who made the science more and more controversial. Many persons who are non-believers, and who argues for the sake of arguing, have struck this science in their own way. On the way to truth, Indian rishis devoted their time and life and kept this divine science alive by learning and memorising since time immemorial.
Astrology is basically a science of information and possibilities. Human life can be more successful and significant by understanding the utility and importance of Astrology. Suppose you come to know by astrological calculation that tides rise at 8 P.M. on Ashtami. After coming to know this you may save your life and property by not letting your ship in the sea on journey. If you do not know this, you may be killed. If an astrologer forecasts rain, you may take precautions, by having an umbrella, whereas one who does not know this may be drenched and find himself in troubles, whereas you may save yourself.
The utility of Astrology is effective in the daily life of a man. In the period, when one is passing through the death- inflicting planet or Mareaka one may save his life by not going under knife or not driving a vehicle on a high speed: Astrology shows light in darkness. Astrology can indicate the bad time when the gold may turn to soil and the good time when soil may turn to gold by the efforts of a man. Astrology may be used for the weather forecast. Like the needle of a clock, a man is attached with Astrology every moment. It is the beauty and peculiarity of human mind that one may obtain vast knowledge from any science to the extent, he likes.
In fact, Astrology serves the purpose of a life-saving device at the time of jeopardy. At the crucial period, when one passes through the most dangerous circumstances or at the time, when one fails in spite of his best efforts, one either goes directly to the temple or mosque or a church or to an astrologer. Temples, mosques or churches do not deliver soothing words, but God delivers consolation through the mouth of an astrologer. In such circumstances, the responsibility of an astrologer is enhanced to a great extent. Learned astrologers and Brahmins are respected like God in India. Only fortune-telling is not as important as Astrology. In India, fortune- tellers are not respected to the extent to which a studious and learned astrologer is respected. Varahmihira says:
which means the most degraded person, even if he happens to be a "Shudra-Mleccha" or Muslim, he becomes as respectable as a rhishi
by studying Astrology. A man becomes holy and reverend by the study of this science. What to say of that Brahmin, who is Brahmin by caste, knows God and knows the celestial science of Astrology also!
The knowledge on entire perspective (सम्यक्) is highly important which has been emphasised on the aforesaid sloka. This can only be obtained by the grace of the Guru. By studying, you may come close to the ideas of Guru, but that remains the bookish knowledge only. In Indian spiritual literature, much importance is attached to Guru. The mystic science like Astrology should be learnt under the guidance of a Guru to have expertised skill and knowledge.
Some persons try to compare Astrology with fatalistic or material science, but now it has been proved that it is closely related to efforts and actions— "theory of Karma (कर्म)" The utility of action and efforts is closely related to the science of Astrology. Astrology does not discourage a man to make effective efforts, nor is it against making efforts for achievement, but it gives indications to take effective steps at correct time.
Astrology is that celestial science, which gives the knowledge of past, present and future. It unveils the mysteries of Nature and through this divine science, we get the capability of bringing betterment and beneficence in the future of humanity.
So the utility and importance of this science is so vast that it may be compared to a deaf and dumb tasting molasses, who can feel the sweetness but can not describe it in words. Vedavyas, describing the importance of Astrology says in his own words that a wooden statue of a lion and a sketch of king on paper may be attractive, but still it is lifeless Just like that, even after the study of the Vedas not knowing Astrology is lifeless or worthless.
About Ascendant
In Trailokya Prakash it has been told that Ascendant is God. Ascendant is the capable master and it is the powerful light. There is no light-emitting object greater than Ascendant, because this is the version of the rishis and gurus.
Acharya Lalla has said referring Garga, Narad and Kasyap rishis that the strength of Ascendant is greater than that of Tithi, constellation and Moon.
In the book "BhuvanDeepak" (भुवन दीपक) it has been told that Moon is like the seed of all the works. Ascendant is like a flower. Navmansha is like a fruit and twelve houses are like the taste.
Importance of Ascendant
As it is not proper to pay attention to the bodies of other persons and avoiding the attention to one’s own body, it is useless to pay importance to the other houses without attaching prime importance and understanding to the Ascendant.
It has been said in Jyotirvivran (ज्योतिर्विवरण) that the work started in weak Ascendant is spoilt as the rainy rivers disappear in summer.
Acharya Renuk has told that as the benefic and malefic results are obtained by Ascendant, likewise all the works become successful when the Ascendant is strong. So strong Ascendant should be decided before starting all works.
Acharya Shripati has told that it is the opinion of the learned astrologers that full success is obtained in the beginning of the Ascendant, the average success in the middle of Ascendant and a little success in the last portion of the Ascendant.

The Characteristics of
Every Ascendant in Hearsay of
Common Man
In the rural areas of Rajasthan a song in Lavani
is popular among the masses, which I heard for the first time from the mouth of Estate-Astrologer Pandit Magduttjiee Vyas in the village Samdandi. It was so enchanting that I was moved and spell-bound. In this lyric, the characteristics of the persons born in all the twelve Ascendants have been depicted in such a manner that is very close to the truth. Not the lyric, but the underlying meaning in essence is being furnished below:
The people born in Ascendant Aries are angry and arrogant. They maintain their relatives and their eyes are reddish.
The people born in Ascendant Taurus are devoted to their Gum. They wear different types of shawls on their bodies and ornaments on the neck.
The people born in Ascendant Gemini are clever and they do not fear anybody.
The people born in Ascendant Cancer mostly suffer from some disease.
The people born in Ascendant Leo are very strong and powerful.
The people born in Ascendant Virgo are impotent in their temperament.
The people born in Ascendant Libra are interested in smuggling and bet.
The people born in Ascendant Scorpio are naughty and selfish.
The people born in Ascendant Sagittarius are wise, skilled and happy persons.
The people born in Ascendant Capricorn are less intelligent and happy in their own way.
The people born in Ascendant Aquarius believe in Tantras and they offer prayer to God.
The people born in Ascendant Pisces find it difficult to compete and survive in this world. They do not blame anybody for any action but think that whatever happens is the result of past deeds.
Ascendant and its importance
Ascendant is the most important and essential element of the birth-horoscope. A group of stars, which arise in the eastern horizon at the time of birth of a person within 30° (thirty degrees) of a Zodiacal sign is called the Ascendant. The period of an Ascendant is two hours roughly. The calculation of the Ascendant is based on the Sidereal Time calculated on local time of the place where a person is born. Birth-horoscope is actually the horoscope based on Ascendant.
The earth-rotates on its axis once a day and thus all the Zodiacal signs are invariably exposed to the solar influence on the first day of Aries; the first degree of that particular sign rises in eastern horizon at sunrise and remaining signs gradually ascend till the next day, when the sun again rises in the second degree of Aries. Thus sun rises on the last day of the solar year on last degree of the zodiac i.e. the 30th degree of Pisces (360° of the Zodiac).
In fact, all the twelve signs rotate in the sky, rising over the horizon one after another in a day at a time, which constitute the twelve different Ascendants. The Ascendant is the first house of the horoscope. Subsequently, there are other houses, which are called second house, third house, fourth house etc. till twelfth-house. The entire universe of 360° is divided into 12 houses in equal 12 divisions and each division is made of
