When I graduated from college, I had a choice of two very different career paths. I could either play professional basketball in Australia or enroll in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst sports management master’s degree program. Even though it’s challenging for most athletes to admit that their playing days are over, I had really decided my path four years earlier. At that time, I chose to attend New York University, which is focused on academics more so than sports, over any of the Division I schools that had offered me a basketball scholarship.
Deep down, I knew I was good, but not that good. None of the Division I schools measured up to NYU academically, and because I wasn’t in the top 1 percent of high school basketball players who’d end up playing in the NBA, studying political science as a student athlete at NYU for four years was a more logical choice. However, it was really tough being in this position once again. Do I choose basketball or academics?
The lure of getting paid to play basketball overseas was tempting. But the University of Massachusetts was only accepting thirty students. If I didn’t enroll, I’d miss the opportunity.
I told my father about my dream of playing professionally overseas and he shot me a look.
Son, what are you going to do? I know you’re going to make the right decision,
he said.
I knew what that meant.
