#1 Scott Bernal, aOCPD detective, did not always see himself as a cop in Ocean City. He had followed his family down into what he calls good old boy country, where it’s not at all easy to fit in.
#2 The love and respect that Joshua and Geney had for each other was clear from the pictures they shared online. They had met in 1999, and had lived together since April 2001 in a suburban Virginia hamlet.
#3 On May 25, 2002, Ocean City police officer Brian Brown went to investigate the disappearance of Geney and Joshua. Their personal belongings were still in the room, as if they had just left.
#4 Bernal found a purse on one of the beds and saw an ID of Geney sitting on top. He then checked the bathrooms, and all of Geney and Joshua’s toiletries were there. He called his captain and told him that something was not right.

On May 25, 2002, three days before Detective Scott Bernal was actively pursuing the missing persons case of Geney Crutchley, Geney was in the Atlantis condo bathroom getting ready to go out when Joshua Ford called his brother, Mark. How about those Celtics. Joshua beamed.
#6
Joshua had a strong sense of unselfishness, and he wanted to help everyone. He had been involved in Salvation Army youth programs, and he wanted to help the couple across the aisle.
#7
On May 30, Detective Scott Bernal arrived at work early. He had a photograph of Geney and Joshua, which the City of Fairfax Police Department had emailed him. In the photo, they were sitting in a restaurant, smiling into the camera. They looked happy.
#8
At some point during the morning, Bernal had learned about Mark Ford’s daughter, Joshua’s niece, being the victim of a brutal unsolved murder. He and his colleague, Detective Brett Case, began to speculate that maybe things weren’t what they seemed.

Detective Scott Bernal, the first marine to be on the force, spoke with a hybrid of a New York City accent and a slight seasoning of the South. He was the first to admit that he was a streetwise, undisciplined kid from the streets of New York when he entered the marines.
