Anya Byrne

Anya Byrne is first and foremost a longtime fan of erotic romance. Starting to write her own stories was a natural progression of her devotion for the genre. Years after she put pen to paper in that very first book, she is just as enthusiastic and, let’s face it, somewhat obsessive about erotic romance and all that it entails. She is steadfast in the belief that there’s nothing quite as hot as an amazing hero—except more amazing heroes engaged in heroic hot lovin’, and has branched out into the field of self-publishing to convince even more readers of this fact. Hopefully, she will succeed. For the latest news and upcoming releases please visit Anya at: http://anyabyrneromance.wordpress.com/

The Decision

Gavin slowly inserted the key in the lock and twisted it, paying close attention to not making any noise. As he pushed the door open, he scanned the hallway of his apartment, only to see it clear of any people. So far so good. Richard was probably home, but he must be on their work computer, browsing the most recent job listings.

Gavin took off his shoes and placed them down. His stockinged feet made no noise as he walked from the hallway toward the kitchen. He removed the champagne, and whipped cream from the bag, hesitated over the lube and condoms and finally left them inside. If everything went well, he’d have to carry them to the bedroom anyway.

This was it, the day he’d been waiting for so long. Today, it was his and Richard’s two months anniversary, and Gavin had finally decided to take a leap of faith and celebrate it in style.

Even if he hadn’t actually done this before, he knew how it worked, and he even had some fantasies which he couldn’t wait to share with Richard. He intended to slip into something more comfortable and pour Richard a glass of champagne, but he lost interest in that tentative plan when a moan of pleasure reached his ears.

Dread building in his heart, Gavin abandoned the supplies in the kitchen and walked toward the bedroom. The closer he got, the clearer the sounds became. He wanted to think Richard was masturbating or watching a porn movie, but he couldn’t deceive himself like that.

The confirmation to his worst fears came when he dared to crack the door to the bedroom open. Two male bodies lay entwined on the bed, moving rhythmically. The sound of flesh slapping against flesh nauseated Gavin, especially since he recognized Richard as the guy currently pounding into the ass of some stranger.

Gavin could almost hear his own heart break—which really, seemed like a very silly thought to have right now. But Gavin couldn’t be one hundred percent rational, not when his entire world had come crumbling down.

He hesitated for so long that Richard and his lover ended up climaxing while Gavin watched. Seeing them writhe together in orgasm infuriated Gavin. He shoved the door open and burst into the room. What in the world is going on here?

It was a stupid question, since Richard’s dick was just now leaving the other man’s body.

Gavin. Shit. I thought you were working late, Richard replied, having enough decency to pull the sheets over his naked body.

I wanted to surprise you, Gavin shot back, feeling like he’d fallen into a nightmare. I succeeded.

The stranger Richard had been fucking lifted his hands, like he wanted to prove he wasn’t a threat. Look, man, I didn’t know he had a boyfriend. It was just a hook-up.

Gavin ignored him, because taking in the nakedness of the other man just hurt too much. How could you do this to me, Richard? he asked.

It’s not my fault, his boyfriend—no, his ex-boyfriend—spat at him. I only wanted to date you to fuck that ass of yours, but you’ve been playing hot and cold with me for months.

It was true that Gavin had issues with intimacy, which was why he never managed to hold on to a relationship. But Richard had seemed so nice. He’d understood Gavin’s problems with trusting other people and agreed to them taking it slow. You said you could wait, Gavin said, aware of the tremor in his voice and hating it with a passion. You said that I could take as much time as I needed.

Richard shrugged. And you can. Just don’t expect me to be as celibate as you. I have needs, you know. If my boyfriend doesn’t meet them, I have every right to go elsewhere.

Gavin straightened his back and narrowed his eyes at the other man. The irony was that Gavin had planned to give his virginity to Richard tonight, but that didn’t matter anymore. You know what? You’re completely correct. Since it’s so obvious this relationship doesn’t suit you, it’s time for you to go elsewhere. Now start packing.

For a few seconds, Richard gaped at him. You can’t be serious. You can’t kick me out. I don’t have anywhere to go.

Try your lover there. Maybe he can give you a hand since you two seemed so very close.

The stranger just scoffed. I was just in it for the sex. If I’d known about the whole… home-wrecker part, I never would have bothered.

He was already pulling his jeans on and gathering the rest of his stuff. Gavin watched him go, distantly wondering where Richard had even picked him up.

Once the door to the apartment shut behind the stranger, Gavin turned toward his former boyfriend again. Well? Why are you staring at me? Grab your stuff and hurry along. I don’t have all day.

With an angry huff, Richard started tossing clothing and other belongings into his duffle bag. It hurt, because since Richard had moved in with Gavin, Gavin had truly felt things were falling into place. Apparently, he’d been blinding himself to the obvious, because now that he’d gotten this eye-opener, he guessed this couldn’t have been the first time Richard had cheated on him.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, Richard finished his packing and pushed past Gavin. Their shoulders brushed as Richard walked by, and Gavin’s body—the treacherous little bastard—responded to it. Gavin reminded himself that Richard was an asshole who didn’t deserve his arousal, and saw Richard to the door, just because he wanted to watch the other man walk out of his life.

Your key, he demanded.

Gritting his teeth, Richard retrieved his key from his pocket and tossed it to Gavin. As he stepped out into the corridor, though, he threw one last look over his shoulder. Good luck finding someone who can deal with your drama. No one is ever going to want to put up with you, Gavin. You’re just a frigid, crazy little bitch, and you’ll be alone for the rest of your life.

With that parting shot, Richard left. Gavin closed the door behind him and leaned against the wood. For a few seconds, he couldn’t even breathe. Richard’s poison had struck him far harder than Gavin would have liked to admit. All of his boyfriends had left him for this exact reason. At this rate, he’d end up an old queen, mourning his lost youth while he struggled to earn enough to feed ten cats.

Gavin slid to the floor and buried his face in his hands. Why could he never be happy? Had he been a horrible person in a past life? Had he wronged someone without even realizing it? It certainly seemed the case. Either that, or the universe had decided to have fun at his expense.

The sound of his ringtone snapped him out of his trance of self-pity. Recognizing the personalized notes, Gavin retrieved his cellphone from his pocket and accepted the call.

Hey, Jessie, he greeted his best friend.

Christ, Gav, Jessie began without preamble, "I don’t know how you do it with these kids. I tried to get them to listen to what I wanted to say about
