    I'm not putting up with this anymore, I tell myself. It's time to leave.

    I get up from the table, interrupting my friend in mid-sentence. Now just what do you think you're doing? she asks. First you tell me I'm being too controlling, and then instead of just telling me what you mean and explaining why you didn't say anything sooner you get up and decide, oh, I'll just leave, without saying a damn thing to my friend who I just so rudely accused--

    As I stroll away her voice becomes too low for me to pick out the words. I exit the cafe with the fresh evening air beckoning me to a new adventure. The sidewalk stretches forward toward the bustling hubbub of the center of town. I'm going to crack this little city and pick out my pleasure with the relish of a squirrel digging into her stockpile.

    That's right, I used the feminine pronoun in the general sense. It's a holdover from my previous life as a woman. One of many holdovers, in fact. I mince past a pair of rough skid row types and they stare open-mouthed at my dewy cheekbones, fuchsia sunset eye and glitter-brushed lips. I stare back, batting my prodigious lashes in my best come-hither. I sense them both take a deep breath of my delectable perfume trailing in my wake.
