The Grand Vizier had wormed his way into the king's inner circle. Now he was always behind the king at court, rubbing his hands malevolently, and lurking. Any time someone wanted the king to do something, the Grand Vizier had a way of preventing it. If you wanted something done, you would have to go through the Grand Vizier. He was the true power behind the throne.
I was a mere financial analyst in charge of tallying the cost of horse hay, dinner chickens, jewels and other castle essentials. I noticed a suspicious amount of money outlaid to automatic chess players
without the corresponding receipts. I went to my boss.
What's with this cost here?
I said, pointing at the large sum on my ledger.
Automatic chess players. Machines that play chess. They're all the rage.
But two thousand gold pieces is an awful lot of money. How many did we get, fifty?
My boss shrugged. See that GV in the notes column? That stands for Grand Vizier. He's the one who ordered this. Take any discrepancy to him.
I was pretty burnt out on my job by this point. I'd worked at the castle since I was 14 and was rapidly approaching my 15-year anniversary. Why not spice things up by actually approaching the Grand Vizier about this?
That's how I found myself strolling into the royal wing of the castle. Like the rest of the castle, it was trafficked by bored guards, random dogs gnawing at bones, stray castle cats stalking mice, bustling maids, et cetera. But I did notice that the decor was more haute couture and in a palette dominated by lavender and goldenrod. There
