    I. James Grant

In the heat of a New York City late summer afternoon, a man, one James Grant walked down the sidewalk. Balding, middle aged, wearing a rumpled, sweat soaked brown suit, he occasionally wiped a damp handkerchief across his forehead. Arriving at a small office building, he pulled a note from his pocket, checked the address, and entered the building.

It wasn’t much cooler inside the building, he noted. Air conditioning probably busted. He pressed the button for the elevator, then looking at the doors, he saw the Out of Order sign. He sighed and headed for the stairs.

His destination was on the third floor, which made it tolerable at least, but only just barely. Exiting the stairwell, he saw his destination. Printed clearly on the semi-opaque window glass were the words Dragonwolf, Inc. The man paused to wipe his damp handkerchief across his brow one more time before knocking gently on the door.

When no one answered after a few seconds, he tried the knob and discovered the door unlocked. He opened the door slowly, and only far enough to poke his head in.

Uh, Mister... Mister Blackwolf? he said.

Seeing a man kneeling, shirtless, eyes closed, in the center of the room--the blessedly cool room with a working window unit--the man ventured further into the office.

    Are you Akira Blackwolf?

The kneeling man opened his almond-shaped eyes and looked directly at the intruder.

Yes. My apologies, I was meditating. Akira Blackwolf. He stressed the first syllable of his first name, in the Japanese style, AH-kee-ruh. What can I do for you?

My name is James Grant. I knew your dad in Vietnam, the man answered.

Akira gestured to one of two client chairs facing his desk. Won't you sit down?

Thank you. James Grant sat in one of the chairs, giving him time to look about the sparse office. The bookshelf with books on martial arts, samurai, Japanese history, Native American rituals; a filing cabinet with three drawers; the overly neat desk; two client chairs, one desk chair, a mini fridge; table with a single serve coffee maker and supplies. Two wall hangings with Japanese writing hung on either side of the double window behind Akira’s desk. Each was about four feel tall, white canvas with a black wooden bar at the top and bottom, black string looped over a nail to hang them. What do those say? James Grant asked.

Akira, grabbing two bottles of water out of the mini fridge, glanced at his visitor to see what he was referencing. The one to your left says ‘dragon’ and the other says ‘wolf.’ He passed one of the bottles to Grant and set the other on his desk. He picked up a purple tee shirt that had been tossed over the back of his desk chair, and slipped it over his head.

Akira opened his water and took a drink, sat down and said, So, Mr. Grant. What can I do for you?

    My daughter's been kidnapped.

Are you sure she's been kidnapped, or has she maybe just run away?

No, no, no. She's been kidnapped. I've got the ransom note right here.

James Grant opened his coat and pulled a note out of his inside coat pocket. He stood up and handed it to Akira before sitting back down. Besides, she's not really the... type to run away. She couldn't.

    I see.

Akira looked at the stereotypical ransom note. Plain copy paper with letters cut from magazines and newspapers, glued in an order to spell out the words of the ransom demand.

We've got your daughter, Jimmy. Ha Ha. We want the money in two weeks or you’ll never see her again.

Akira stared at the paper a moment before he realized what was wrong with it. Why is there no amount? It just says, ‘the money’?

James Grant wouldn’t look Akira in the eyes. He cast his gaze to his fidgeting hands in his lap and stammered, This isn't the first time they've contacted me.

Akira leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers in front of his face. Why haven't you reported this to the police?

James Grant still wouldn’t meet Akira’s gaze. I did. Th-th-they didn't believe me.

Akira stared at his potential new client a moment. Hmmm, he said finally. So you want me to find your daughter?

James Grant finally looked at Akira. Yes, Mr. Blackwolf. I need you to find her.

Akira took a pen and legal pad from the left hand drawer of his desk. I need some information, he
