    The Root Cause of Abortion

Every word of God is pure ... (The Holy Bible, King James Version, Proverbs 30:5).¹

The Christian movement against abortion in America has lasted for decades, yet from 1970 legal abortions numbered 193,491 and increased by over 200% by 1971, to 485,816. They increased from 586,760 in 1972 to 763,476 in 1974. By 1975 there were 854,853 performed and abortions reached 1,079,430 by 1977. In 1979 they reached 1,251,921 and stayed over the 1,200,000 count until they reached high of 1,429,247 in 1990. The number of abortions stayed over the 1,300,000 mark from 1990 until 1994 when they numbered 1,267,415. By 2005, abortions reached 820,151, which does not include abortions performed in California, New Hampshire, and Louisiana. (Abortion Surveillance—United States, 2005) [I chose to report these statistics in this manner to show how abortion has increased over time, and, to indicate by citing accurate numbers, rather than just approximations or averages, that these numbers refer to real people.] The previous statistics are of reported legal abortions.²

These sad facts reveal that something is terribly wrong with our country. They reveal that the American people no longer value life as they once did, that life has become cheapened, and that something else is of more value.

Not only does abortion persist, but it has become increasingly brutal with the advent of partial birth abortions. Even though many Christians are vehemently opposed to the practice of abortion, and present a united front against it, particularly during elections, they seem to be mysteriously thwarted in their efforts to end it. Despite all the protests, marches, elections and congressional bills, we still have abortion--and precious children are still murdered every year with the consent of our judicial system.

One day I was considering this dilemma, when I decided to pray about it. I asked God directly, why was abortion still legal and so prevalent, after all that had been done to stop it? I was surprised at what I felt he was telling me. Instead of receiving an immediate answer, I felt led to ask another question—what was the root problem of abortion? I was unsure of where I was being led by this answer, but I was familiar with the concept of root problems.

Before I delve into the root of abortion, I would like to familiarize the reader with the concept of root problems and its importance, and therefore its significance in the issue of abortion. The best way to clarify root problems is to use a metaphor—the obvious one being trees.

Imagine a married couple who have a tree in their backyard that presents a problem. Although the tree provides shade, it blocks a desirable view—of the setting sun. The couple decides something must be done, and if only they could see through the tree they could view the lovely sunsets. So the man goes out back and cuts off most of the leaves with some pruning shears. This works well for a while, as they can now see through the tree much of the beautiful sunsets.

But, in a short time, the leaves all grow back and the view is again blocked. So the man decides to be a little more thorough and he cuts off the branches. Now the view is even better—they can see even more of the sunsets. Yet, however, with the passage of months, the branches return, and soon little twigs follow, and eventually the dreaded leaves. The man again returns to the tree resolving to rid himself of the problem altogether. This time he brings a chain saw and cuts down the tree, leaving nothing but a stump. The happy couple now have months of uninterrupted sunset viewing and you can guess what happens next.

Yes, the stump eventually sprouts twigs which turn into stems which eventually become a trunk, which grows tall and brings forth branches, on which leaves soon grow. The husband realizes that there is only one plan of action left: to uproot the stump out of the ground and get rid of it. So he wraps a chain around the trunk, and hooks the chain to the back of his car and pulls out the stump and takes it to the dump. Now the problem tree is removed for good.

The problem of abortion must also be solved in a similar manner. Christians, who fight against it, must uproot it. They must focus their attack not on the leaves, twigs, branches, and trunk, but at the root of abortion and thereby get rid of the whole problem for good. This is how abortion must be eradicated. Otherwise, it will
