    CHAPTER ONE

Five years was a long time, and there were days when Oliver had thought that he’d felt every single second of it. And, much of it had been absolute torture. A lot can happen in half a decade. Divorce. New home. New school. Puberty. Becoming a teenager. New friends. If he was honest, the last one hadn’t really happened. Not properly. Most kids thought Oliver was weird and Oliver didn’t like to get close to anyone, so he ended up on his own a lot. There were a couple of kids that appeared to tolerate him, but they were oddballs too. Although he doubted that any of their family members had been kidnapped by a mythical forest that existed underneath an actual forest. But, hey, Oliver was sure that they had their own shit to be dealing with.

The police investigation into Georgia’s disappearance had turned up nothing. There were no clues and, for many months, no leads. Long and brutal, the finger had been pointed at each of his parents at some point. Obviously, each one had denied any involvement, but that kind of thing seems to stick. It hung around like a bad smell, lingering on their clothes and in their hair, never washing away or wearing off. Draining the colour from their faces, it aged them ten years in no more than a couple of months. Not only did they have to deal with losing a child, but now they were being blamed for it too.

    No-one had believed
