CHAPTER ONE
––––––––
The sound of the doorbell echoed around the house. It was so loud - so invasive - that Lexi thought it could have been heard for miles. Her body cringed. 'Shut up, shut up, shut up!’ she thought, as she ran down the stairs to the front door, her feet making a cacophonous racket as they stomped on each stair. The opportunity for stealth had passed, she had the godforsaken doorbell to thank for that. Now all she could hope for was to get the upcoming encounter over and done with as fast as possible. After that, she’d have to investigate disconnecting that bloody bell.
Gasping for breath and realising that she really needed work on her cardio, Lexi reached the front door. Her beetroot red face pressed up against it, her eye searching through the peep-hole. The scene outside unfolded as she had expected; a man stood directly ahead of her, dressed in a uniform and holding a cardboard box. Above him, a fluorescent light flickered as if possessed. Darkness claimed everything else. Composing herself, Lexi unlocked the door.
Just take the parcel. Sign the thing. Shut the door.
That’s all she had to do.
Wincing as the door creaked, Lexi looked the delivery man in the eye. ‘Smile.’ she thought, ‘I should smile.’
‘Please sign.’ the delivery man said, his electronic device was perched on top of the box. Lexi nodded and scribbled something unintelligible onto the display. As if Lexi’s nervousness was contagious, the delivery man started to look around while she signed. He didn’t want to be there either. Lexi couldn’t blame him. The world was broken now.
‘Thanks.’ Lexi said as he handed her the box. It was heavier than she had expected, and she nearly doubled over. She could feel the delivery man’s eyes on her now.
