The Curse of Anubis
()
About this ebook
I had been the assistant curator of my uncle’s museum for a few years now, so I should’ve known what to do with the contents inside the package he sent me; a beautiful, very old necklace. But, instead, the magic it was laced with lured me to put it on. The bad part was that it refused to come off and now my nights are plagued with dreams of the god of the underworld until they became a reality.
Knowing I wasn’t meant to wear his necklace, Anubis decided to help me search for the one who had sent it to me. In the meantime, I was to stay in the duat, with him, under his protection. However, the duat wasn’t meant for a mortal, and it was driving me mad that I tried escaping.
The only other option for me, to help accept my fate, was to become his mistress. I didn’t want to accept Anubis’s proposal, but I found myself falling for the god of the dead. Until someone from my past, a memory that had been wiped from my mind showed up with other plans for me.

Chapter One
After checking and double checking that today’s inventory list was completed and accurate, Laney nodded once in confirmation and walked back to her office. Her desk was already a mess of accumulated papers from this week, but she still placed the list into its own folder and tossed it on top of the ever-growing pile. Tomorrow, she would have to figure out where to place the new artifacts in their storage facility. Since everyone else had already gone home for the day, it would have to go on the whiteboard that hung on the wall next to the door to her office, which was full of impending tasks. For now, the artifacts would just have to sit in the receiving area.
Laney stretched, feeling her spine crack satisfyingly after a long day of work. The routine of lights out, locking her office, and clocking out on the shared office computer near one of the few exits was growing so familiar she didn’t even have to think about it. Since Laney was the last to leave and it was so late, the security guard looked shocked to see her. Laney opened her mouth in a smile to gripe about overtime in usual small talk when she heard a knock at the delivery door.
Both, the guard and Laney looked at each other, startled. Then, the guard sighed.
Probably just some delivery kid tryin’ to get his deliveries done for the day. I’ll go check the cam, see what’s up.
With that, he was gone. They both knew that it was way too late for some random delivery kid, but she guessed he was just hoping it wasn’t an issue that he would have to deal with. Either way, she wanted to go home.
Laney stood there, staring at the door in hopes that the person would just walk away. But, there was yet another knock. Cringing at the thought of having to deal with this, she stepped closer to the door.
Who is it?
Laney forced some sense of bravery into her voice.
A young male voice replied, I got a package here, for a,
—pause while he presumably checked the shipping label— Miss Laney Connors?
Laney’s heart jumped when she heard her name. She had never received a personal package at work. Anything that was sent here was supposed to be addressed to the museum, not to her by name. Museum deliveries are from noon to three. You can come back tomorrow and drop it off then.
There was no response after that. She shook her head, knowing there were signs outside the door clearly stating the acceptable hours for dropping off deliveries. It was no longer considered evening; who would try to deliver a package so late at night?
Laney glanced at her phone to check the time, unsure of how long she should stand there to ensure the person was gone. Something in her gut was telling her to be careful. If she opened the door, he would probably still try to pawn off whatever the package was on her. After about two minutes had passed, Laney took in a breath and cracked the door open just enough to peek outside. The streetlights illuminated the receiving area but threw creepy shadows on the dumpsters.
After poking her head around the door, she couldn’t find anyone there. Looking back, she didn’t see the security guard around either. Laney’s car was in the parking garage across the street. She quickly locked the door behind her and made a dash for it. Sure, it was paranoid of her, but Laney was alone in New York City. Not very safe for a woman in her early twenties, or really any woman for that matter.
Since she lived roughly ten blocks away and it wouldn’t take her too long to get home, just to be safe, she drove around the block a few times. Keeping an eye on her rearview, Laney made sure there wasn’t anyone following her home. She parked her car on the street and made her way into her apartment. She locked and kicked the doorstop into place, securing the door from any would-be-intruders.
Deep breath, Laney,
she breathed to herself. She was home. She was safe.
Laney sucked in a shaky breath and went into the kitchen to grab some food. It was late, and she was starving. Yet, she couldn’t go to bed just yet. The day after tomorrow, Laney was going on a trip to Cairo and needed to pack. Her uncle had called a couple of weeks ago to ask her to join him on a special dig. Apparently, it was something she would have to see in person to understand. Before Laney could even begin to protest, he told her he’d already bought a ticket for her and sent the link for her boarding pass to her email. Knowing she was the head curator at his New York museum, he made sure it was an open ticket so she could be there for the rotating exhibits.
Tiredly, Laney dragged herself into the bedroom after she ate a sandwich and yanked her suitcase out of the back of her closet and began filling it with clothes that was essential for the weather in Egypt.
Chapter Two
When Laney entered her office after lunch the next day, there was a medium-sized package sitting on her desk. She looked at the label and sure enough, it was addressed to her. It was good that the delivery person had come back at the appropriate time. But she still had to question: why not just send it to her apartment?
She took a box cutter and ripped open the tape with ease. There was a little note on the inside in her uncle’s handwriting.
Laney,
Here’s a new piece I found recently. It’s far too valuable for it to potentially fall in the hands of one of the others at the museum or in the hands of anyone here on site. I know you will
