FL STUDIO SHORTCUTS - Screech House

    INTRODUCTION

Throughout this book you will find many valuable tips, tricks, and shortcuts. However, if you want to apply them, you need to have access to FL Studio. FL Studio is a well-known D.A.W. (Digital Audio Workstation). A D.A.W. is just a fancy name for an application geared towards producers who want to make their own beats. That’s why, if you want to make your own beats as well, and benefit from this book, make sure you have access to FL Studio. If you don’t, try to obtain it and install it on your computer. Thereby, I’m also going to assume you have a Windows workstation.

When you have access to FL Studio, just open it and follow along. This is absolutely critical. If you don’t apply the information you’re about to learn, it will never sink in. That would be a waste of your time and a waste of my writing efforts. So please, don’t procrastinate and practice right away as you read through the chapters. But of course, do it at your own pace.

Speaking about chapters, you will find five inside this book. Thereby, each chapter corresponds with one of the main elements in FL Studio. These elements are the Channel Rack, Piano Roll, Playlist and Mixer, but also general settings. This way, you can easily search and navigate, especially if you need a refresher. Be aware however that there will always be some overlap between the FL Studio elements. That’s why some of the topics herein could easily fit in two or more chapters. Nonetheless, I gave those my best judgement and put them in the most relevant place.

Now, if you don’t know the Channel Rack, Piano Roll, Playlist and Mixer, shame on you. You probably haven’t read the FL Studio Beginner’s Guide. However, chances are you do know what they are and that’s a great place to start from if you want to understand FL Studio Shortcuts. But to make sure you’re not missing out; I will explain each very briefly at the beginning of every chapter. Additionally, I will reiterate some instructions from the FL Studio Beginner’s Guide that are relevant for the topics being discussed. So, you will never be in the dark.

Up ahead, you will encounter numerous tips, tricks, and shortcuts. But this time around I decided not to include pictures. Pictures easily become outdated, they artificially extend page count and require a lot of ink (for paperback that is). This will increase costs significantly, which may lead to people missing out on my work.

Still, if you think you can benefit from having visuals, you can find all the upcoming topics on my website and YouTube channel as well. Clearly, not as detailed, but feel free to check those out. Nevertheless, if you follow all the instructions to a tee, you won’t miss out on anything today.

Well, maybe not literally to a tee, because FL Studio allows for various ways to do tasks. There are simply multiple paths that lead to the same outcome. However, to keep the instructions somewhat short, I usually present only one approach. Despite that, always feel comfortable to get things done in your own preferred way. It’s not a religion.

So, with that out of the way, get yourself ready and let’s jump straight in.

    FL STUDIO CHANNEL RACK

The Channel Rack in FL Studio serves as the collector of all your instruments, samples, or anything that makes a sound. It is a dedicated place to open, use and edit those. Thereby, you can access certain tools that allow you to manage instruments and samples, such as a sample editor, instrument selector, or step sequencer. Furthermore, the Channel Rack provides the options to make short musical rhythms and melodies based on a logical time loop. Therefore, it is usually the first place to start.

If you need to access the Channel Rack, you can use one of the following methods:

Press the Channel rack icon in the panel at the top of FL Studio.

Click View in the FL Studio menu and select Channel rack.

    Press F6 on your keyboard.

How to create a new pattern in FL Studio

Let’s kickoff with a simple tip to warmup by talking about patterns (not to be confused with your parents). Patterns in FL Studio allow you to make different loops, beats, rhythms, or melodies. Thereby, each new pattern gives you the possibility to work in a fresh sheet, so to speak. You will need those fresh sheets to build more loops, beats, rhythms, or melodies. After all, every song has a bunch of those. You may require dozens or hundreds of patterns in a full project. Therefore, it’s essential that you know how to access them and how to create new
