Mixing Edm Music - Screech House
Introduction
Before we start exploring all the common mixing mistakes, we need to clear some things up. This way we can be on the same page. (Pun intended. Since this is a book, we are always on the same page.)
You don’t need to have much experience
The Mixing EDM Music guide is created for people who already know a thing or two about producing music. Thereby, I have to assume you know some basic workflow and terminology. For example, you generally know how to work in your D.A.W. (Digital Audio Workstation); you know what an equalizer is, and you already have some experience creating snippets or songs.
That’s why, if you’re an absolute beginner, it’s probably better to start with a book that teaches you the essentials of making songs on a computer first. Once you have some experience, just come back to this guide.
Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t learn anything as a rank beginner. In fact, you can probably learn a ton, which can still give you a big advantage. But be warned, you will not find detailed instructions from a rank beginner’s point of view. Else, it will take up thousands of pages and nobody would want to read that. Let alone pay for it.
You can use any workstation
Now, let’s talk briefly about your workstation. It could very well be that you already own some hardware equipment or you’re thinking about buying it. But for the sake of this guide, it’s absolutely not required. You can buy what you want, but this book selectively ignores any hardware tools or setups. It may come as a surprise, but you simply don’t need it to make incredibly professional songs. Just a computer, a D.A.W. and a decent amount of grey matter will suffice.
So clearly, you do need a computer, but it has to be fast enough. If it isn’t, you may get cracks and stutters while creating your song. This is something you want to avoid. However, these days speed is largely a nonissue. Most computers are powerful enough to allow for big musical projects.
In contrary however, your speakers may play a bigger role in your mixing abilities. If you can’t hear the whole frequency spectrum of your song, it can lead to poor mixing decisions. So, definitely make sure to use a good set of speakers. Though, I’m not an expert in this field, so I cannot give you much of advice. Just get something of good quality and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Using high-quality speakers is a great idea, but a good headphone can help as well. However, you may find that it makes your ears go numb faster than speakers. Using a headphone will put your ears close to the audio signal, which can mess up your perspective a little bit. For example, your song can seem awesome on headphones until you wake up the next morning and listen to it on speakers. At that moment you may realize how much time (and sleep) you’ve wasted that night. This is something you definitely want to avoid. So, simply be aware of the ear-numbing effect of headphones, especially on higher volumes. Nonetheless, it can still be a great piece of equipment to use in your mixing endeavors. It may allow you to hear sound details you could have missed otherwise.
While headphones are not susceptible to environmental noises that much, the same cannot be said for speakers. Your speakers more or less demand a production-friendly environment. For example, noises from the outer world or bad room acoustics can mess up your perspective, possibly resulting in unwanted mixing decisions. That’s why make sure to sit in a quiet room and use common sense to assess if the environment is acceptable for awesome song-building. Thereby, keep it simple for now and don’t feel the need to build a fancy studio or what have you. I’m not saying you shouldn’t, but even in a pretty lousy environment you can still produce outstanding work when you follow the strategies in this book. Hey, I often make music on a laptop in a bedroom with the windows wide open. Go figure.
You can use any D.A.W.
Depending on your preference, it’s likely that you’re using a different D.A.W. than me. A D.A.W. stands for Digital Audio Workstation and is the application we use for making songs. Personally, I’m an FL Studio user, but you don’t have to be. The strategies herein are not D.A.W. specific. For example, it doesn’t matter which equalizer you use or which synthesizer you prefer. Although this book is written in a D.A.W.-universal way, you may still come across unavoidable FL Studio references. As you can imagine, it’s impossible to be 100% unbiased. Therefore, just take my words with a grain of salt and always translate them to your own
