Introduction

What does music production entail? This question must have crossed your mind more than once if you are genuinely interested in producing music. Music production is simply explained as an umbrella term that envelopes the different processes involved in the production of songs.

Since there are different parts of music production, a music producer may be more talented and well established in one aspect of music production than another. For instance, some producers focus on the engineering aspects of music; some focus on the composing aspect, some focus on the business aspects, some focus either on the mentorship aspects or the artistic aspect, while others are just naturally gifted in all aspects. They have the ear for good sound and a natural affinity for producing great music such that anything they touch turns to gold.

Music production involves spending a lot of time listening to already written records, editing the sounds, the rhythm, the beat, the vocals to conform to your taste, creating fresh records from scratch, and remixing already produced and published songs. In simple terms, music production entails; recording, composing, audio mixing, and audio mastering, among others. Do not fret; more light will be shed on the entirety of what it takes to make a song.

Who is a producer? A music producer is an individual with an inborn artistic personality, which he or she utilizes to combine all the necessary tools, techniques, skills, and all other materials required to produce music. A music producer must have the ability to combine all the necessary components to achieve maximum effect. A music producer is akin to a commander of a platoon of soldiers or a director of a film in charge of managing all resources; the artiste, the audio engineers, the songwriter, the sounds, and all other resources required to produce music, in order to efficiently produce music that promises to be a hit.

A music producer doesn't only spend time in the studio making a song or songs, he or she also spends time outside the studio or music room if you like marketing the song. This fulfills the entrepreneurial duty of a producer.

The processes, methods, and technology involved in music production are ever-changing. Music production has been evolving since the existence of music itself, and it will continue to do so. As a result, music production appears daunting and tasking to a beginner. Apart from the ever-changing nature of music production techniques and technologies, the production cost is also another obstacle for a beginner. Despite the fact that the nature of the expenses has changed over time, music production still requires a significant budget. It is a relief that the days when you have to rent a studio space or purchase enormous space-consuming types of equipment to be able to record a song are gone. All the requirements for music production in recent times are easy to get; a laptop, free software, and a good internet connection. This has made music production relatively easier to achieve compared to the old times whereby music could only be heard on the radio, at concerts, in clubs. This fact does not only culminate as an advantage in the form of making music production easier, but it also brings about a disadvantage in the form of fierce competition present in the industry.

This is why, as a rookie in music production, it is not advisable for you to waste your time and energy on half-baked forums or YouTube videos. What you need to become an authority are the right tools, commitment, passion, hard work, diverse skills, an efficient marketing strategy, and oftentimes money. Furthermore, it is not until you attend music classes or study music encyclopedias before you can produce music. In fact, you do not need a strong musical background or a very sophisticated technology to produce music. This book tries to show you how you can comfortably produce music with the simplest, most efficient, and most trending set up available.

What you get from the book

The objective of this book is to provide you with the necessary information and to serve as a form of manual for you in your music production journey. The book seeks to teach you techniques on how to harness from the best producer to how to fit your studio space regardless of the size (which may be in your living room, bedroom, basement, a carved out countertop space in your kitchen, or even a bag/box you can carry with you everywhere you go). Furthermore, the book promises producer techniques, software, materials, and equipment that are budget-friendly, especially for a beginner. The book has been particularly designed as a step by step reference book, such that you have to go through from the beginning to the end to get the most out of it. The book promises to give you everything you need to become the best music producer you can be.

What you will not get from the book

Manuals from the manufacturers of varying brands of studio equipment are there to teach you how to operate the equipment. Just so you know, this book will not give you that. This is because the information that will be provided is not specific to any type of software, whether Reaper, Cubase, Ableton Live, Pro tools, or any other Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software. The information available is general and goes across the board.

Chapter One : The Beginner Recording Studio

In this chapter, we will be outlining all you need to establish your recording studio, how to get the basics that are required and recommended, and the affordability of the whole music recording shebang. As a beginner, it will be irrational for you to spend a lot of money renting studio space to make your tracks. The best course of action is to carve out space in your home for recording activities.
