Dr. Douglas M. Baker. English born and raised in South Africa has done extensive scientific research into those hinterlands of the mind which one might call psi-semantics. He graduated in the Arts & Humanities in South Africa and qualified in medicine at Sheffield University (UK) in 1964. Having taught in the East End schools of London for 10 years, he began his tour of the Western world giving lectures and seminars in Esoteric Healing, Esoteric Anatomy, Esoteric Astrology, Esoteric Psychology, Esoteric Science and Metaphysics. He, more than any other, set in motion the trends towards alternative methods of medicine which have transformed that field in Britain today. As medical advisor to the De la Warr laboratories in Oxford, he undertook research into Biomagnetism and quantum physics their effects on the human aura and dark matter, producing the book by the same name in conjunction with George de la Warr. INTRODUCTION

The spectrum of Man's consciousness is vast. We are faintly becoming aware that there are states of awareness on this planet as high above those of `average' man as his are above that of a domesticated animal, and that every man has the potential within him to embrace such elevated states. The attainment of them forms part of what is called Esoteric Sciences.

The growing acceptance of Esoteric Astrology parallels the growth of Man's mind. His increasing awareness embraces not only new viewpoints as to the structure of the universe about him, but also new concepts about his own place in the order of things. The expanded mind of nineteenth century man would no longer accept Genesis or the current teachings that placed Man's origin in time as being 4,000 B.C. Darwinism and the discoveries of Gregor Mendel concerning inheritance of characteristics altered all that.

The best way to appreciate Esoteric Astrology is to see it as an integral part of Ancient Wisdom. The totality of the Wisdom of the Ages brought into being such giant projects as the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was already old 50,000 years ago—an edifice which was but one of many which expressed outwardly the Inner Mysteries which were unveiled only to the privileged few in each developing civilisation.

To the enlightened, our universe is seen as an immense cosmic Entity, a sentient Being in Whom man but lives and moves and has his being. No less is the tiniest atom a sentient point within the consciousness of the Cosmic Logos.* When we speak of a planet, a fixed star, a galaxy and even greater units, we are referring in Esoteric Astrology to vast celestial Beings whose consciousnesses flood us all constantly, benignly or malevolently according to the various factors present.

Astronomy is the study of the anatomy of the universe . . . a Cosmic Entity. The giant radio and visual telescopes plot the structures of His parts. Astrology, on the other hand, deals with the effects that the anatomical parts of the celestial Beings have on each other. Astrology is therefore concerned with the physiology of the universe. Orthodox astrology is concerned with the physiological effects of celestial structures upon that tiny, short-lived group of ‘cells’ in the body of the Cosmic entity which we call Humanity. Esoteric Astrology tries to understand the interaction of great cosmic entities with each other and studies the long-term effects which their interplay has upon the human race and its home, the planet Earth.

Esoteric Astrology is more concerned with the indwelling Life of a form rather than its personality, and with whether the form expresses the life’s purpose rather than with its aggrandisement or analysis. The working out of cosmic laws, like the Law of Karma and Rebirth and the Law of Synthesis, are deemed of more import for they fashion the destiny of the sum-total of Man rather than a fragment of him, such as the manifesting personality of one little life within the great immortal Life of a human monad. Esoteric Astrology is concerned with the personality only from the point of view of bringing it into alignment with the Soul, the Higher Self and its purpose.

Esoteric Astrology intimately incorporates Esoteric Psychology, which differs from orthodox psychology (though not existential psychology) in recognising a third factor as part of the totality of Man. Non-esoteric psychology considers Man’s behaviour to result from the interplay between the genetically acquired equipment with which he is born and the environment into which he is thrust. Esoteric psychology says that Man possesses a higher nature—an eternal, immortal and enduring part of him. Spiritual integrity depends on the extent to which the personality is aware of and interacting with its indwelling spiritual Nature.

HOW ESOTERIC ASTROLOGY DIFFERS FROM ORTHODOX ASTROLOGY

Man is a magnetic field at all levels—physically, etherically, astrally, mentally, etc. He lives within the magnetic field of the earth, as he has done for centuries. Dividing the earth’s magnetism into twelve segments in relation to ourselves, we have the twelve houses relevant to the science of astrology. Moving through these houses, 24 hours a day, in each day, are the huge magnetic fields impressed on us by the Fixed Stars and those constellations of stars known as the Zodiac, the influences of which are tremendous. Then there are also the magnetic fields of the planets within our own solar system which reach us mainly through our inner bodies and aura, and they change in relation to each other and to us every day.

When these fields affect our personalities through the lower three (the physical, the astral and the mental), we call this Orthodox or Exoteric Astrology. However, when these forces reach us through our souls (and their action may be spread over many lives), we call this Esoteric Astrology—the astrology of the Soul. Thus, Esoteric Astrology is concerned with:

The Soul’s progress and its opportunity to express itself in this particular life.

Factors which affect the personality from within and from previous lives, through the mechanism of the Law of Cause and Effect or Karma.

The unfoldment of the egoic lotus, for the Soul of man is said to be likened by the Masters of the Wisdom to an unfolding lotus of three tiers of petals.

The drawing opposite depicts the origin of The Seven Rays, arising as they do from the seven stars of The Great Bear (sometimes called The Plough). They are the outward manifestation of the seven Head Centres of The One About Whom Naught May Be Said. He is using the great Sun Sirius, known as the Dog-Star, the Star of Mercury and the Star of the Buddha, to focus the light of the Seven Rays (of Logoic Mind), as symbolised by the mirror, onto the Sign of Aquarius and the planet Earth . . .
