    The Russian Revolution of 1917 was the result of a modernization crisis. The government tried to modernize Russia’s economy in an external and internal environment that was deeply threatening to the autocracy.

    Russia was the last country to abolish serfdom, and the emancipation of 1861 left peasants feeling cheated since the landed gentry kept roughly one-sixth of the land. The average peasant allotment shrank by one-third between 1861 and 1900.

    The Russian intelligentsia, which had been campaigning for the autocracy to grant them civil and political rights, played a role similar to that of the European bourgeoisie in overthrowing the autocracy in 1917. The industrial proletariat, which was becoming more concentrated in certain regions and large enterprises, had a political influence out of proportion to their numbers.
