    Conclusion

    Introduction

If we were to look at the first half of the 20th century as one big reel of suffering and turmoil, then Russia and its sphere of influence would undoubtedly account for one of the biggest chunks on that film. In World War II alone, the Soviet Union had experienced losses of life that are probably unfathomable to most people today. In a mere four years, the USSR lost an estimated 26 million of its citizens, including civilians and military personnel. And yet, this unprecedented episode of carnage was but one in a series that had been going for decades, leading toward this extraordinarily violent culmination. The Russian Empire and the early USSR, as its successor, had already seen the deaths of millions to war, famine, political purges, and major turmoil that radically reshaped one of the world's greatest powers into something many could hardly recognize.

A crucial part of that turmoil and a monumental change, of course, was the Russian Revolution that began in 1917. This great upheaval began as an outcry of battered people who could no longer see any good outcome on the course they were set on, and it ended up as one of the most important events in recorded history. The Russian Revolution changed Russia from the ground up, but it also eventually changed the world forever. The deeds and successes of Lenin's Bolsheviks in Russia sent ripples throughout the world, and these ripples continue to this very day.

The number of outright revolutions that were directly inspired by Lenin is certainly impressive in its own right. Still, the Russian Revolution also had subtle effects that were just as important, especially in countries where no major revolutions took place. Just the fear of having to deal with that level of proletarian wrath and societal chaos was often enough to force the powers-that-be to give concessions to workers and other people in many countries. Strikes, protests, and other events can, to this day, shake up entire establishments if only they start to appear like they might take a turn for the course that was seen in Russia in 1917. As such, the true scope of the effect of the Russian Revolution on the world is almost immeasurable.

The only thing that can compare to how consequential the Bolshevik uprising was is the speed with which it had occurred. Indeed, the revolution in Russia managed to knock a major power out of the Great War and end centuries of imperial rule in just a couple of years or less. Just like many of its problems, the Russian Empire was long in the making, and it's difficult not to marvel at lightning speed with which it all came tumbling down only to be rebuilt just as fast, although into something very different.

In this book, we will explore the violently fascinating and historically crucial episode that was the Bolshevik revolution, starting in 1917 and ending in 1923 at the end of the Russian Civil War. Chapter I: Background and Causes

If history has taught us anything, it's that events of great magnitude and historical significance don't happen overnight, even if it appears that way on the surface. In the case of the Russian Revolution, the
