    Daybreak peeked through the sheer shades covering the window in the master bedroom of the Harlem apartment on 136th Street. Adina rubbed her eyes, opening them to focus on the clock perched on the corner of her nightstand; five forty-five a.m.

    Her man’s arm was draped across her waist as he snored softly. His close-cut beard brushed the nape of her neck. Gently, she moved out of his embrace. He didn’t stir.

    She entered the bathroom, stopping to stare at her reflection in the mirror before turning on the warm water, splashing it on her face with open palms.

    From the moment they met, sparks flew between her and Deion, the man in the bedroom. Although she vowed never to involve herself in a long-term romance again, after a two-year relationship with Qudair who proved monogamy wasn’t in his vocabulary, the chemistry between them overrode her common sense.

    She stood in the bathroom’s entryway, leaned against the frame, and watched the object of her affection. Her body grew warm as she absorbed Deion’s dark, mocha skin and perfectly chiseled body. His bald head shined, and his beard with a few specs of premature gray sparkled. Adina was in love with this man and he with her. Yet, a tinge of sadness covered her soul.

    One year of bliss and she’d have to break the news that her singing career was taking a favorable turn. Her manager, Maxwell Alston, called about a six-month gig in Europe which could lead to a recording contract. It was a dream realized. To sing for a living was all she’d ever wanted to do.
