EPILOGUE
PART ONE – CHAPTER ONE
Raelene assessed her fifty-one-year-old self in the mirror, admiring her perfect size twelve body that had curves for days. She fussed with her salt and pepper Halle Berry cut, feathering through with her fingers, away from her youthful, mocha face
Her almond-shaped, nut-brown colored eyes were alluring. She felt more robust and jovial than ever and had everything she could want and need. But, the conversation with her son, Andre, weighed heavily on her mind.
She put on a navy-blue Liz Claiborne dress that embraced all her curves and slipped her feet into a pair of white and navy, open-toe, four-inch heels, giving her the look of a polished, but sensual woman, all the while thinking how odd it was that Andre didn’t want to be picked up from Philadelphia International Airport, but wanting her to get all dressed up and meet him at Bon Appétit at six instead. The conversation was suspect, and she hoped he wouldn’t spring any life-altering news on her, such as having a child on the way, reenlistment, or marriage.
Please God,
she whispered to herself.
She glanced at her watch and remembered Andre’s warning about not being late. Even though he was the one who needed to be worried about that, she lived just outside the city limits of Wilmington, Delaware, and Bon Appétit was across town. If she jumped on I-95 North to avoid traffic, she could minimize her time by a third and find a parking spot. She might be cutting it close, but she was determined to get there before he did.
CP Time indeed, she thought. I’ll show him. What the heck is he up to, though?

Raelene nursed the vodka and cranberry with a slice of lime as she scanned the Italian-inspired décor of the restaurant and watched the patrons enjoying animated conversations and easy laughter. As she opened her compact to freshen her plum lipstick, her gaze connected with her six-feet, brown-eyed son the moment he entered the restaurant. The medals that adorned his shoulder were expanding.
Maybe that’s the news. A smile lifted the corners of her lips but quickly stilled when she realized he wasn’t alone.
The tall, striking, middle-aged man in uniform, with a complexion that mirrored her son’s deep brown skin tone, had an array of medals along his shoulder that were near blinding. His panther-like gait was more confident than arrogant and drew the attention of many of the women in the establishment as he followed Andre to the reserved table. Raelene’s breath caught in her throat. Her body tingled in places she thought were dead and gone. Try as she might, she could not look away; her eyes remained fixed on the handsome stranger.
Hey, Mom.
Andre kissed her left cheek, allowing her gaze to remain focused on the drop-dead gorgeous stranger right behind him.
This is Lieutenant Gregory Banks. Lieutenant, meet my mother, Raelene Thompson.
It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Thompson.
Gregory’s baritone voice was remnant of the maestro Barry White. He removed his hat, revealing close-cut hair that glistened with hints of gray. His skin was smooth with chocolatey goodness and his eyes, light brown and piercing. The lieutenant accepted
