Jamie awoke to the sound of birds. He did not open his eyes. He remained motionless. He listened to the light trill of the small animals.

To anyone else, this melody of birds singing first thing in the morning would be welcome.

But to Jamie, the sounds of birds singing in the morning was a daily nuisance he had to endure. Just like the presence of his overweight and elderly wife, named Lois,  who lay in the large king-sized bed near him.

Even though he was awake and refused to open his eyes, he could feel Lois' bulky form pressed against his body.

Lois liked to sleep tightly against his right side.  All warm and snug as a bug, as she would say.

To Jamie, Lois was like an oversized insect.

During the long years of their marriage, he had started to dislike her. And with each passing day in her suffocating presence, Jamie's dislike for Lois bordered on hatred.

Jamie shook these dark emotions away and he chose to open his eyes.

The sounds of birds became louder.

Jamie blinked as the brightness of the room assaulted his sleepy eyes.

    The entire room was pink.

    Pink and gold.

The walls, the door, the carpet, the furniture and even the fireplace  were all pink.

The twenty-seven birdcages that were pressed against the walls of the room were all gold. Each birdcage held a single bird. All of the birds were awake. And each one of the colorful creatures was chirping. And singing.

The noise became suddenly unbearable to Jamie. His head started to ache.  And due to his discomfort and before he thought about the consequences of his actions, he groaned loudly. And then he felt it.

Lois stirred against him.  She moved her huge body and pressed her form tightly against him.

Jamie turned away from Lois in silent disgust.

Lois’ arms went up and her fat-laden limbs encircled his body and trapped him within her tight slumbering embrace.

Jamie raised his hand and he tried to pry his wife's fat arms away from his body.

Lois' arms tightened around Jamie's form.

Jamie continued to pull at Lois' cumbersome arms. He stopped moving when he heard her speak.

Jamie dear, Lois said in a raspy sing song voice that might have been sexy during her prime nearly forty-five years ago. Are you awake?

Jamie froze.  He closed his eyes, became motionless and said nothing.

    Lois laughed gaily.

Jamie sighed wearily. He grit his teeth when she felt him squeeze his trapped form in a crushingly tight bear hug.

Jamie found it hard to breathe. He struggled to remain silent with the hope that his wife would think he was still asleep.

    His plan did not work.

Lois giggled loudly. And she snuggled against him.

Jamie grit his teeth. He suppressed a groan of frustration.

Lois' arms suddenly loosened around him.

    Jamie sighed with relief.

This emotion was short lived however because one of Lois' arms suddenly left him right before one of her fat fingers tapped lightly against his lips.

Jamie hated when Lois touched him like that.

He immediately opened his eyes. He turned to his wife and hid his expression daily shock at seeing her face.

Lois’ face, once tight, pert and taught, now showed signs of advancing age.

All of the facelifts did nothing for the ravages of time. Though, Lois fought the ageing process by undergoing numerous experiences under the plastic surgeon's knife.

Jamie stared at his wife's slowly withering face. And he processed a
