    INTRODUCTION

Twenty-twenty was deemed as the year of transformation. As the clock struck twelve, eager party goers from all around the globe made resolutions to have perfect vision in the New Year. This year is going to be the year, they said. Little did we know, disaster was on the horizon and everyday life would change, forever!

Fast forward to March 11, 2020. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic.  Two days later, President Trump declared a national emergency and forcing mandatory quarantines.

Schools closed, restaurants stopped indoor dining, businesses laid off workers, state agencies turned to teleworking, and gyms shuttered operations. Non-essential workers were required to stay indoors and only to venture out for food and medicine.  With the increased time at home, so came the lockdown pounds and untended weight gain.

Trying to keep some semblance of a regular routine against the backdrop of a global pandemic is certainly testing, but it’s not the only cause of quarantine weight gain.

The most common psychological symptoms related to lockdown include depression, stress, low mood, irritability, insomnia, anger, and emotional exhaustion, research published in the Lancet found. The physiological changes that occur as a result of these symptoms – for example, a surge in levels of the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol – can increase cravings for sugary, fatty food while at the same time slowing your body’s metabolic rate (the rate at which you expend energy at rest).

Lockdown also changed the way we interact with others, reducing physical contact with others and leading to an increased sense of social isolation. Some people try to combat their emotional distress by overeating to create a sense of fullness. Additionally, lonely people have higher circulating levels of the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin after they eat, causing them to feel hungrier sooner.

Many people adjusted to a more sedentary lifestyle during lockdown, and not just because the local gym was closed. Much of the low-level activity we don’t consider – during the commute, in the office, at lunchtime – was taken out of the equation in lockdown, which means burning fewer calories per day. It might not seem like much, but it all adds up.

If you’re concerned about quarantine weight gain, The Covid Diet will give you tips and strategies to transform your health and increase your resistance to COVID complications. Focus is placed on making changes across the four pillars: diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management.

CHAPTER ONE:  GET READY FOR THE FIGHT OF YOUR LIFE

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.  Jim Rohn

One of the most important decisions a person can make is to become the best version of themselves. Often times because of unfortunate and unfair circumstances, living to our fullest potential is seems out of reach.  In fact, sometimes it appears quite impossible.

Of course, the truth is that, no matter where you are in this pandemic, you can always start anew. You have a choice of simply continuing to struggle with stress, boredom, and worry or living a healthy lifestyle void of obesity related diseases.

Even better, this life of health is something you get when you make the commitment to change.  Weight loss in general is not easy.  It requires lifestyle changes and breaking bad habits that have spun you and
