#1
I hear drums in the distance, and soon two Hungarian soldiers march by me in the center of my small town, shouting, All Jews to the Town Square! I join the crowd of confused people.
#2
The family was eventually forced to pack up and leave their home. They were given only what they could carry, and the only valuable they had was Mama’s engagement ring, which was given to her daughter to hide in her clothing.
#3
I was forced to take off my dress and blouse, and hand them to my mother. I was then pushed outside with my siblings and two other families. The soldiers checked us for weapons.
#4
The Gendarmerie officer put his hands on the shoulder of one of the Brach girls, named Lutchie. He pulled her aside and searched her. Then he grabbed her sister, Miriam, and searched her. The Rosenberg twins were then taken away and searched.
#5
The soldiers took us to the town square, where we saw green buggies made from cracked wood with old horses hitched in front of them. The Jews from our town were loaded into the buggies, and we were pushed forward. We started off, slowly moving away from the square.
#6
The last thing I see before I am carried away by old horses from the town I love, is a black camera in my face. Then a flash. A man has climbed onto the back of the buggy. He takes pictures of us with his camera.
#7
I have red hair, and some people say that doesn’t deserve the spotlight. But through dance, I have discovered a place where I can be myself more than anywhere else.
#8
The Grand Performance is the highlight of the school year. We are the only school in Crasna, besides for the yeshiva, so everyone comes to the performance. I was assigned to the dance group, and we practiced every day for an hour. The music was beautiful, and I felt like I was dancing with the souls of all the people who had died.
