Acknowledgements
Could I really get away with writing a book without acknowledging the beautiful team of supporters who have had my back at every step of the way?
First and foremost, thank you to my husband Ian who is always the loudest member of my cheer squad. Babe I thank you for always being willing to push me beyond my own limitations.
Huge and heartfelt thanks to my editors, Holly Parkinson and Sheridan Ireland. Words are your forte, not mine, and I am eternally grateful to you both for making me sound smart and articulate.
To my dear friend Kellie. You gorgeous girl, are an inspiration. The warmth, kindness, compassion and humour you bring to your journey as full time carer for your beloved parents is nothing shy of amazing. I’m blessed to have you in my tribe.
Dear Carers,
This little book is dedicated to You. It’s about YOU looking after YOU.
It’s for those of you who:
•Have started the journey as a carer and realised, ‘holy shit’, there is a LOT to this;
•Have been on the caring journey for a while and realised that you can’t always carry the load yourself;
•Just need to know you are not alone;
•Want to put in place some strategies to make sure that in the book of life, you don’t forget the chapter of YOU.
You’re doing a great job, even if you might doubt yourself sometimes, please trust that. I really want to honour you, whoever you are. I want to honour the caring journey that you’ve taken on, whether that was a willing and conscious choice or just the luck of the draw.
I have a lot of respect and a lot of compassion for people who take on a caring role. It doesn’t matter whether that’s caring for a loved one who’s at the end of their life, caring for an ageing parent, or caring for a family member or a friend who’s living with a disability – huge hugs and high fives your way! I honour you!
I’ve done the caring role in an end of life capacity. Three times. I know what it’s like to be part of a care team for someone with a terminal illness and I know that it takes more out of your heart, your body and your mind than you ever first imagined. It’s one of the hardest things you can do and at the same time it can be one of the most rewarding.
Most carers fall into their role, not because they grow up wanting to be a carer, but because life’s circumstances are presented in such a way that a caring role is needed. So for many reasons, people take on the job. Looking after someone you love can be an honour and a privilege. And bloody hard work…
And the emotions! So many of them, and often all at the same time. It can be pretty normal to feel like you’re on an emotional roller-coaster, sometimes up and sometimes down, sometimes just stuck in limbo while other emotions get on or off the ride. And feeling
