A fun ancient story - the competition that decided the Chinese Zodiac order

Once upon a time, a Chinese Emperor organized a race competition inviting 12 animals as participants, where the Chinese Zodiac order was determined by the shortest finishing time. During the race, the rat bounced on the ox’s shoulders—then to jump off once the ox had passed a river, with the smart trick the rat won the race by a leading distance of a nose. Hence, the rat is the first animal in the Chinese zodiac, the ox is second, and the remaining 10 were placed depending how fast the animals finished the race. The pig ranked last because it paused for a snack and took a nap en route.

Your zodiac year is considered unlucky

One might expect in the Zodiac year when one was born under returns 12 years later, the year will be the time to glint. The pattern is in fact vice versa - that one shall be more careful when one Zodiac year comes, as the year is believed to be a year of obstacles.

In Chinese, your zodiac birth year is called ‘Ben Ming Nian’ (‘your year’). The belief that ‘Ben Ming Nian’ delivers bad luck comes from the notion that individuals in their zodiac year are said to collide with the God of Age (‘Tai Sui’’), and provoke the God’s curse. The Chinese horoscope defines Tai Sui as a collection of celestial stars that resembles the position of Jupiter.

Last year, the Rat zodiac was influenced by varied negative events attributed to a partial coincidence with the God of Age (‘Tai Sui’). Transitioning into the year of the Tiger in 2022, the Rat’s fortune will become better relative to last year.
