That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure.When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri.The start of her stories is the easy part. The thing about Leo…

The fifth sign of the zodiac, it is represented by Leo, king of the jungle. It is a fixed fire sign ruled by the sun. It’s energy is bold, glamorous, intelligent, and courageous. Leo naturally leads the Zodiac and is often associated with royalty and those who lead others. They are normally generous to others and love to live life to its fullest.

Those born July 22–August 23 are Leos. A weakness is their need to be first and often are first even at the cost of others. They can be selfish and sometimes narcissistic. While they have a strong need to succeed, they often can have lazy tendencies and must need to see the need in doing something or they may just leave it be.

Prologue

Gregor and Joanie were both Leos. That was all these two fated mates seemed to have in common. He was set to be the ruler of the wolves while she’d planned to be a healer and mate a male who she could respect and admire. So far, he’d done little to impress her. Gregor didn’t seem to be able to do anything well. Nor at this point, had he even seemed to try. Used to females falling all over him, he expected the same from her. That wasn’t happening.

She’d been sent home with him for two weeks against her will, and she was two days in and about to meet his parents. The way his father treated his second son, Grant, had not impressed her either. His mom seemed to be a regular loving mom. It wouldn’t be long before she would know.

All she wanted to do was make it the whole two weeks and escape. Life couldn’t be so cruel to her and stick her with a guy like this. Not that she was under the illusion that life was fair. But it seemed to be even worse since she’d met him.

Chapter 1

The Parents

They were ready and it was time. He held out his arm for her to take as he had gotten in the habit of doing. Refusing to take it would seem churlish since she’d always been a well-mannered girl and it seemed impossible to change that, she took his arm. As far as she was concerned, Gregor was using her good manners against her.

My parents are very excited about meeting you. My father in particular hopes you will make me a better male. It’s a tough job, do you think you can handle it? Gregor chuckled. Maybe he didn’t feel it was true.

Do you really want me to answer that?

Maybe we should skip it. It was obvious he was aware of her opinion.

Are they aware I didn’t want to be here? Joanie asked.

This was my father’s idea. He said it was done this way in the old days.

Are you telling me he’s a brutish Neanderthal?

I wouldn’t put it that way. He just wants the best for his son.

I notice you didn’t say sons because he doesn’t seem to care if Grant dies.

Sh, we’re within hearing.

Joanie wouldn’t be accused of having bad manners unless his father pushed things. She had a feeling he would. Nothing she’d heard about him had been good so she thought maybe Gregor would look good in comparison. The only one worse was Darby’s dad. They entered the room where his parents sat, and they both stood. Maybe it was her imagination, but his mom looked sympathetic. She’d been through a similar thing herself, but she hadn’t fought against it.

Nice to meet you. She said using her manners.

His father looked at her like she was a piece of meat while his mother did all the polite things. It’s so nice to meet you as well. Gregor has spoken a great deal about you. Has he given you a tour of the place? Maybe he took you riding.? She asked.

Yes, we did go riding. The place is beautiful. Joanie commented.

I’ve heard you are a witch and a healer? Vasil Packmaster, Gregor’s father commented.

Indeed, I am, After that the conversation stalled.

All they had was small talk until even talk that died. They were dismissed and she was relieved until the next morning when she was summoned after breakfast. You called and I came. Joanie remarked,

Just like a dutiful daughter. His mate sat in the corner listening. I can tell you don’t like me much. Why is that?

I don’t like the way you treat Grant.

I see he has another champion?

I think you’d find the men that fight with him approve of him too.

You’re right, they do.

Everyone but you. Why is that?

A look of complete rage came over his face. He killed his mother and the love of my life.

You blame a baby for that?

He breathed life for the first time, and she died. He said.

Gregor was first? It’s unusual to die in the second birth especially with a witch delivering.

There was no witch. The birth was sudden, and the she-wolves said none could come.

Joanie found this hard to believe. Assisting in birth was an industry among witches and most could flash. Give me your hands. She demanded.

He did as she asked not thinking. Many witches could bring back a scene from the past if one of the participants was there. I see Justine was in charge and she sent the others from the room. That’s who killed your wife and she tried to kill Grant too. He wasn’t in the womb long enough to absorb the amount of poison it would take to kill him. You were looking in the wrong place.

There was a long silence before his wife stood. My door is closed to you. Don’t come knocking. The lady said. That’s what Joanie had been told to call her and she didn’t know her name. We should have never joined, it wasn’t worth it. She walked away and Joanie wasn’t sure what she intended to do.

Life around here was unraveling. What do I do? He asked.

Let her cool off then romance her. That woman loves you. Was your first wife your fated one?

No, we had a wild passion and that was more than I ever expected to find.

I believe your current mate is the one. Joanie expressed.

How do you know?

"There are signs, but I can spell for it if need be.

I think you’re right now that I’ve had time to think about it. The alpha said.

There’s a lot to forgive. Maybe you should start with your daughter, Yvonne?

What about her?

She’s terribly unhappy. The girl has found her true mate, but her husband uses the child to extort her to stay. Joanie admitted.

He’s just like his father. What should I do?

I can spell for his mate. When she shows up, you can bargain for her to be freed. The child already cements the family bond.

Do it.

He’ll have to be there.

Good luck with that. Vasil said.

I have ways, but it may upset someone or not.

Just do it.

She flashed away and flashed him to the woods. Poor guy looked as unhappy about the arrangement as the daughter was. A prick of his finger and as he woke from his drunken stupor, he was home, and no one was around. It shouldn’t be long.

How did it go?

It shouldn’t be long. Joanie offered. I think he may have already found her.

You don’t plan to join with Gregor, do you?

If you were a woman, would you?

Probably not. What needs to be done to make you accept him?

Let him grow up some. He’s never had any responsibility. He’s no leader now. But I believe he could be. Joanie admitted. There was nothing left to say, and she swept out of the room.

It was the next morning. Days passed quickly here, and much was happening. They ate breakfast at the table, but the lady wasn’t there. How is your plan going?

If we go see your daughter after breakfast, everything should be right on track. Joanie observed. It was rare she involved herself in family issues.

They ate their meal then headed out
