The gleaming magic city of Viridia rose up around the ship navigating its waters. It was quite an impressive sight, all the white towers and shining stones with their decorous sculptures of wizards on every tall wall. Its beauty was only slightly dampened by the unfortunate circumstances that the three companions had found themselves in.

The next stop is by the lower quarter, the stern looking captain said, all other passengers will disembark before yourselves. No one will have known you were even here.

Below decks was dark and damp, nearly swampy from the warm summer sun. The Captain was a gruff man of far too many years, he was missing an eye. His beard was unkempt and he had the air of a pirate that had seen many battles on the high seas.

I appreciate it, the tigerman said, though it's not the way I'd prefer to have my vacations.

The captain snorted, my apologies to your sad state of affairs, Grampion. The whims of the bureaucrats always blows like a foul wind over mercantile men like ourselves.

Thank you, Grampion said, may the winds ever blow against your sales, Captain Erowyn.

And may they fill yours with fortune once again when this bad business is done, the captain replied.

The sound of shuffling scales and an annoyed hiss startled them both.

What a lowly town, was sniffed, hardly a jewel in sight and only humans decorating the walls.

The naga gnashed his teeth, his nose flared. He was used to the comforts of a palace and not the discomforts of a stuffy hold and was chafing already.

Do you mind, Lazek? a large bearman said, as he squeezed himself from a hatch in the floor.

The Captain's aged face bespoke at least some amusement at the naga's discomfort. No one liked the snake men, not unless they benefited from their gold.

How dare you refer to me by name! I'm the grand vizier! Lazek shouted, Low born scum!

You aren't the grand anything anymore, the bearman reminded him, and the name's Hurfy. Try to use it once in a while, besides as a curse.

The bearman, Hurfy, had once been part of the royal guard. He was in Grampion's estimation slightly thick in the head and far too loyal. But like all the others caught in a scheme, he had been slated for execution just like the rest.

I would prefer it if we kept to our plans, Grampion said, once we get into the city. I'll have to go looking for my old contacts and you, Lazek-

What? Lazek hissed, forked tongue flicking from his mouth.

Try not to insult everyone beyond their tolerance in the first five minutes, Grampion said.

The naga let out an annoyed hiss.

They were lucky to be alive, it was only Grampion's quick thinking that had allowed them escape on a ship before the executioners came calling. Though he would have much preferred to leave shore without Lazek, who annoyingly pushed his way on ship by suggesting if he wasn't allowed on it he'd call the royal guards.

If I'd had to share a cell with him, I'd have jumped out a window, Hurfy said.

I'd have been joining you, Grampion said, be prepared. The city is large but it's organized very precisely just how mages like it. Hurfy, you have a man to meet up with and a place to stay until we can organize the ship on the morrow. Lazek, I suggest you make your way into the canals, a naga stands out a mile even in this place, there's more cover and people won't ask questions down there. There's an Inn and a shipyard by the edge of the gate.

And where might you go, Lazek snapped his jaws, ex-privateer?

I'll be in the naval quarter, Grampion said, calling in every favor I can to get us out of these precarious straits.

It could have been worse, Hurfy said, at least we're all alive with our heads still attached to our bodies.

For now, Grampion said, but we can't linger long. Make your peace, do whatever you need to do before we're off to who knows where to lie low until this mess blows over.

Once they had dispersed from the ship, Grampion did what any sensible ex-captain of a pirate ship would do. He counted the gold in his pockets and headed towards the crummiest Inn he could find in the naval quarter.

    The city
