    It had been two years, according to Laffa’s mini computer. Two years or two dozen new moons since he’d crash-landed on an alien world and began trying to repair his ship.

    It felt hopeless. After the first quarter, the surface of the planet went through harsh cold seasons and Laffa had been forced to retreat into the ground.

    The lifeforms that appeared to be the dominant species were called humans and Laffa had spent hours every day listening in on their conversations and trying to learn their complicated language. His studies of their linguistics worked much better when he spied on them, since then he could see if they pointed to something or gestured. After doing so every day, he was fairly confident in his ability to understand the most common language, though there appeared to be many.
