Molly's Spy Mission - Carmen Allen

    CHAPTER 1

    A SCARY MISSION

It all happened so fast. One minute Molly was sitting in the palace games room planning her next checkers move, and the next she was running down the staircase.

‘HELP!’ Molly yelled as she burst through the back door and ran across the terrace. She quickly scanned the swimming pool. An orange ball floated at the far end.

    Had she imagined it?

    She looked closer.

A tiny face peered up at her from under the sparkling water.

    Wide eyes full of fear.

With no thought for herself, Molly jumped into the pool, clothes and all. The water was up to her chest. She grabbed the little boy and lifted his head above the water.

It was Billy. He coughed and spluttered as Molly held him close. ‘You’re safe now,’ she said.

    Molly rescuing Billy

With one arm tucked around Billy’s chest, Molly made her way to the edge of the pool.

Jonathan, Billy’s adult carer and companion, arrived puffing. He lifted them both out of the pool. ‘Oh, Billy, Molly – sorry. I was watching over the little ones in the playground, turned my back for one second, and Billy was gone.’ He took off his big jacket, wrapped it around the two children and held them close.

    Billy was sobbing.

Molly spoke kindly. ‘Billy, I know you were scared, but it’s all over now.’ She put on a cheery voice. ‘Wanna see if we can get an ice cream in a cone?’

Billy stopped crying, looked up at Molly and smiled.

Molly grinned, but on the inside she felt shaky and nervous. She hoped they wouldn’t have bad dreams tonight.

‘So tell me,’ the King said to Molly. ‘How did you know Billy had fallen into the pool?’

Molly and the King were seated in the magnificent palace library. Hundreds of books lined the tall walls. It was the King’s favourite room and he sat on his throne wearing his royal robe. Molly’s curly brown hair was neatly plaited and she was dressed in her pyjamas, ready for bed.

‘I saw an orange ball fly past the window. Then I looked down and saw someone fall into the pool,’ she said. ‘The older children were playing football and the ball landed in the pool. I think Billy was trying to get it out.’

‘Excuse me, Your Majesty.’ Molly’s companion, Sarah, appeared in the doorway wearing a long blue dress. ‘I have the hot chocolate and biscuits you ordered.’ She smiled and placed them on the gold table in front of Molly.

Sarah’s role was to look after Molly in the palace. She was like a school teacher and mother to Molly, and to some of the other children, too.

    ‘Thank you, Sarah!’ Molly beamed.

‘Yes – thank you,’ the King said kindly.

Sarah left the room, quietly closing the door behind her.

The King and Molly enjoying hot chocolate in the Palace library.

‘One thing I love about you, Molly,’ the King said, smiling, ‘is your willingness to help others. It’s lovely to see how quickly you jumped in to save Billy. That’s why I wanted to speak with you this evening. Some of my people need your help. Let me tell you about the Treasure Trickers. They are my enemy – they’ve travelled to the Otherlands in my kingdom and stolen beautiful treasures from my people. They care only about making themselves rich.’

‘That’s so unfair!’ Molly put her hands on her hips. ‘No one has the right to steal from other people.’ Molly knew only too well how horrible it was to be robbed. She would never forget the day her beautiful white shoes, a birthday gift from the King, had been stolen.

‘So far, the Treasure Trickers have stolen treasure from three out of my four Otherlands. They must be stopped before they reach the fourth land,’ the King explained.

‘Where are the Otherlands?’ Molly asked.

‘They’re far away. The Trickers can only be stopped by a person in my royal family. You, Molly, belong to my family. You’re a princess. How would you like to go on a special mission to find the stolen treasures and stop the Trickers?’

Molly blinked with surprise. ‘But how can I do it? I’m only ten.’

‘I’ll explain what needs to be done, and then we’ll talk about how you’ll be able do it.’

    Molly nodded.

‘When you go to each land you’ll need to work out what type of treasure has been stolen.’

Molly’s eyes lit up. ‘Will it be gold?’

‘No, not gold. It’s not a treasure so much, as something that is treasured.’

    Molly looking confused.

He’s talking in riddles, Molly thought. How will I work out what the people treasure?

The King knew Molly didn’t understand, so he gave her a helpful tip. ‘When you’re in the land, ask yourself, what’s happening here that seems a bit strange? This will be a clue for you. Secondly, work out who the Treasure Trickers are in that land. The Trickers are good at two things: they’re liars, and they’re clever at disguising themselves. Things won’t always be as they appear. That’s why they’re called Trickers. They’ll even try to trick you, so be alert.’

‘They’re clever at lying and disguising themselves,’ Molly repeated to herself. She bit her lip and concentrated hard.

‘Next, if you work out what they’re stealing from the people, try to stop them from continuing to steal. And lastly, you’ll need to catch the Trickers and bring them back to me.’

Molly’s eyes opened wide. ‘Me? Catch the Trickers?’ She wasn’t sure she’d heard correctly. ‘How will I do that?’

The King placed his hand gently on her head and blew softly. ‘Molly, I hereby give you my special power for catching the Trickers.’

    The King blessing Molly.

Molly felt a wave of goosebumps travel from the top of her head, down her back to her toes.

He continued, ‘If you want to tell a Tricker to do something, all you need to say is I come in the name of the King! However … he warned, you’re not to use this special power until the time is right.’

Molly still felt a bit nervous. She wasn’t sure she
