Molly's Big Decision - Carmen Allen

    CHAPTER 1

    A MAGNIFICENT SIGHT

Molly looks out her bedroom window and sees a palace in the distance.

Ah! It’s still there. An excited gasp escaped Molly’s lips, and a smile broke across her face. She pressed her nose against the icy-cold window. If you could see what she could see, it would take your breath away too.

Perched high on a hill not too far away was the most magnificent palace. A cone-shaped golden spire glistened on each tower. Perfectly kept gardens and neatly trimmed hedges surrounded its four sides. Behind the palace, white clouds puffed their way slowly across the big blue sky.

‘Molly, what are you looking at?’ Suzie asked from her bed.

‘Oh my!’ Molly exclaimed without turning to look at her roommate.

Suzie hopped out of bed and scooted over to the window. ‘Molly, it’s A-MAZ-ING!’

‘I know, right? I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a bright blue glow in the room. I crept over to the window, and there it was!’

    ‘It’s beautiful,’ Suzie sighed.

‘Sure is,’ Molly agreed. ‘Where do you think it came from?’

    ‘I don’t know.’

‘I wonder who lives in there. A king or a queen, maybe? Oh my goodness, Suzie, what’s a palace doing in our village?’

‘I wonder if anyone else has seen it.’

‘Mmm,’ Molly wondered. ‘Do you think we could go there and visit?’

‘No. We would never be allowed to go and visit.’

‘Suzie, my father used to tell me a bedtime story about a magical palace that travelled to different villages across the country. At night the palace glowed like a jewel, brightly lit by blue-and-emerald-coloured lights. That’s exactly what this palace looked like in the middle of the night.’

Molly paused as a new thought crept into her mind. She whispered to Suzie, ‘What if it wasn’t just a bedtime story? What if it was all true?’

The question hung in the air as the girls started to daydream. I wish I could see inside that palace, they each thought.

The sun sparkled against the palace windows and reflected onto Molly’s young face and curly brown hair. She turned her head slightly and closed her eyes to fully absorb the sun’s warmth. It was such an amazing sight. She wanted this beautiful moment to last forever. It had been a very long time since she had felt this happy.

You see, Molly lived in the village orphanage with other boys and girls who, like her, had no parents. Her mother and father had died in a car accident when she was five. She had been hurt as well in the accident. But her broken leg hadn’t hurt nearly as much as her broken heart, which still ached. Not a day passed when she didn’t miss her mother and father.

Downstairs a gong banged loudly. This meant it was time for all the children to start their morning chores. Both girls quickly dressed for the day.

Molly and Suzie hurried off down the hallway. They chatted excitedly about the mysterious palace. Mr and Mrs Furrows, who ran the orphanage, would be waiting for them in the dining room downstairs. At least, that was what they thought.

Mr Furrows pointing to the girls.
