Assertiveness Training Guide The Importance of Connecting Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual Energies to Build Strong Relationships with People - Jim Colajuta
Chapter One
Introduction: what is assertiveness
Assertiveness is a manner of life, a method of conducting business founded on mutual respect and consideration. It is all about building connections that are founded on trust, respect, openness, and honesty. Assertive relationships are when people attempt to understand one another, acknowledge their differences, challenge and encourage one another, and be open and honest with one another. It takes guts and a willingness to question personal principles to develop assertiveness and assertive relationships. It entails being open to change and new ways of being,
thinking and feeling, as well as doing,
or behaving. Assertiveness is a personal journey of self-awareness and inquiry that leads to developing a strong and integrated sense of self. It is an interpersonal journey in which people engage and connect with others, their differences, and commonalities, and work together to build really inclusive and assertive organizations.
Self-respect and respect for others are at the heart of assertiveness. Self-respect entails being self-conscious or being aware of one's own identity. Respecting others entails being aware of who they are, in their differences and similarities. This allows people to appreciate each other for who they are, for their differences, while also exploring and working with them, knowing that there is an underlying foundation of respect and esteem for each other as people, for each other's humanity. People with aggressive/defensive and passive/submissive life positions can be drawn to each other inside and outside work. They form a symbiotic relationship in which those with the aggressive/defensive life position put others down to feel better about themselves. Those with the passive/submissive life position have their beliefs about self and others confirmed as they are put down and found to be lacking somehow. People with a manipulative/divisive life perspective believe that they are not worthy and that others are not either. Few people in the working world have chosen this life path. However, when things are tough, some people may find themselves in this life position and may benefit from the assistance of a counselor during this time. The task for everyone is to build and maintain a healthy living posture that is assertive/creative; I'm OK: You're OK. People who choose this life path choose to respect themselves and form connections in which there is an underlying respect for other people and their
