Occasionally I gave the Valiant a burst of acceleration. It felt good to be away from the confines of living on the Gold Coast strip. Despite the beauty of Burleigh Heads, at times I had found it oppressive. I had lacked the physical and mental fitness to make the most of it, to appreciate it to its fullest. The beautiful beaches, the girls in bikinis, the casino, the parties. I had been too idle, sleeping in, smoking weed, drinking too much, and losing when I did gamble. The endless warm days and blue skies, and the salt air from the sea, had rusted me, and my mind.
Besides that, I was broke, and had no way of raising an income. There was no work for me on the Gold Coast. Plus, I couldn’t get the
