When it was over, an unfamiliar calmness began to take hold of her. She lay on her back and watched the stars. Eventually she lost consciousness. Later, the warmth came, lifting her as gently as she could ever have imagined. She went with it. Wanted to follow it. To the end. Beyond the end. There was nothing else. Nothing left. And it took her, slower than time, but never ceasing or faltering.

Detective Inspector Sarah Burdon arrived in Worthing just after noon. There were a lot of noisy seagulls circling overhead. She called the station commander, then was met by him and shown around the building and her desk and given her keys and other essentials. After she settled in, she took a walk into town and had some lunch. On her return, she was met by her partner, Detective Mike Latham.

She was a redhead, almost forty, from London. The first time she had been told she was sexy, was when she had been fourteen. Ever since then, she had tried unsuccessfully to hide the obvious.

He was handsome, tall, dark hair and in his mid-thirties. He had kind eyes. He was originally from Belfast and still had the accent.

We already have a case, he said.

Really?

Yes. There was a suspected rape on Saturday night.

Suspected rape?

A girl in her twenties, on a Hen party, was found early on Sunday floating unconscious in the water near the pier. She had been cut, badly. She is in critical care. Lost a lot of blood.

Has she said anything?

"No. She is still unconscious. They will call me if that changes. I have
