about the author
prisoner
they tell me to run
but with each beat of my foot
to the ground
i see my pain flash before my eyes
run, move forward they say
but it’s like someone has grabbed me
by the head and is forcing my eyes open
to watch the replay of
my most hurtful moments
and when i grow too tired
and my eyes finally close
the light of the film still shifts
in and out across the side of my face
run they say
but they know very well
that i’ll trip and fall halfway

and i get caught
between smiling
and crying
no one can see you
while they’re walking
but i can
and you’re smiling back at me
