How much control does a father have over a son? Jason Sapphire believed he had complete control. Son, Winston Sapphire believed that his father had no business deciding his life. A conflict occurred and Winston was left alone without parental support. This book describes his life.

    Sapphire Industries

Sapphire industries are a leading supplier of kitchen cabinets and other wooden cabinets in the United States. The owner is Jason Sapphire who built up the company from scratch. The company is a vertical organization in that it is not dependent on subcontractors and cuts down its own trees and refines the wood for the cabinets.

The shop was huge, with all kinds of equipment such as lathes, planers, joiners and all kinds of saws and dust collectors. He employed mass production, where a machinists or group of machinists would be responsible for one piece of the cabinet and their finished parts would be brought to the assembly line where the finished parts would be installed. It was a very smooth operation, and the production rate was excellent.

Jason frequented the country club, and he was there this afternoon, bragging as usual. "In a number of years, I will be a billionaire, and then I will retire and leave the business to my sons. I have two sons, Jeremy and Winston and they both are very smart. Jeremy is the oldest and is in college right now. At my insistence, he is studying Engineering, which will prepare him for the job at Sapphire.

    Winston

Winston, the younger son was a senior in high school. He was the editor of the school newspaper, the captain of the basketball team, and the heartthrob of the bobbysoxers. He was not only a good athlete, but he also was a straight A student. He matriculated advanced placement exams and though he did well on all, he excelled at English and History. He was mediocre at math and science. He knew what he wanted to do in college and that it would be contrary to his father’s wishes.

Winston spoke with his mother Emma Sapphire. Mother, I do not want an Engineering curriculum in college. As editor in chief of the school newspaper I am dedicated to Journalism, and that is what I want to do in life. My father shall not dictate my life. Mother replied, You know your father. He will not accept anything less than what he desires. Be careful Winston.

Several hours later, the confrontation took place. Jason opened the conversation, It has been rumored that you do not want to enroll in an Engineering curriculum in college. That’s right dad. In school I have been exposed to Journalism and that is what I want to pursue. Journalism will not help you run Sapphire Industries. I do not want to run Sapphire Industries, I want to run a newspaper. I will not support you unless you take engineering at UNC. Winston replied, In that case, I will have to find alternative means. You are my father, but that does not give you the right to run my life. The conversation ended and Winston knew that he would not attain support from his father, and he was very aggravated about his father’s domineering attitude. To obtain college entrance, he must indicate how he will pay for it. Winston decided to visit Mrs. Austin, head of the English Department in his high school.

    Mrs. Austin

Winston made an appointment to see Mrs. Austin, the head of the English Department at Winston’s high school. Winston and Mrs. Austin continue to have a very good relationship, since Winston is the principal editor of the school newspaper and has done an exemplary job in that position. They met in her office.

Mrs. Austin, I am in a bind regarding college. My father will not support me unless I take an Engineering curriculum. My interest is in Journalism, and I want to take that course in college. I am wondering whether I could get a scholarship to State College where I could pursue what I hope to be my livelihood. Since my father will not support a Journalism - curricula, I have no means of support.

Mrs. Austin listen attentively to what Winston was saying. Your father should know your talent. You have done a masterful job as editor of the school newspaper and your talent is exceptional. Perhaps I should speak to your father. No, it would be a waste of time. He is a very stubborn and domineering man. Everything must be his way or else he will throw you away. I do not like him even though he is my father. Can you help me?

I will try Winston. I do have influence at State College. They know of you and are impressed. I will get back to you in a few days.

Several days later, Mrs. Austin called Winston into her office. "State College would be willing to give you a partial scholarship supplemented by a job in their kitchen. The combination would cover the full
