    My divorce was the best early Christmas present I had ever received. I married young — 23 years old, and three years later, I was done. It wasn’t even a matter of me not loving Joseph; it was a matter of me not liking him at all. I married him because he was a good look on paper — he and I were educated, and we both came from good old Texas families. Our families had been friends for years, and we grew up alongside one another. It was expected for us to be together.

    What people didn’t think about is that we had nothing in common save for our upbringings. He preferred to talk to me about his latest experiment. He rarely asked me about my life, or even talked about his life outside of his studies. We really didn’t go out together and live life. He was his work, plain and simple. Living with him was more like living with a roommate.

    I knew when I was done. I was trying to read a book and he kept droning on about how they’ve been working on stabilizing a new element or something. His voice was so monotonous, I just heard an endless stream of nothing.
