      I tear open the envelope from Bad Girls and Naughty Nights Publishing. The word rejection peers back at me and I toss it into the drawer with the growing pile. I don't bother to read it, because I know what it will say: Not enough sex and too much emotion. Only they won't have bothered to say it that nicely.

      Back to the drawing board, I murmur to myself and power on my laptop. I slam the drawer shut and sigh.

      Bad morning? an unfamiliar male voice inquires from the doorway.

      And you are? I ask, crossing my arms. As chief writer and editor of Air of Magic Magazine, I'm not used to people barging into my office uninvited and without knocking.
