Chapter One

I wish this stupid holiday would go away. Paul Michaels closed the front door of his townhouse and switched off the porch light. He loved the nip in the air from the crisp October day. The show of color in the trees as the leaves switched from traditional green to yellow, orange and red were some of the prettiest things he’d seen. October had been his favorite month—until the horrible night his life changed. He shook his head.

I hate Halloween, Paul mumbled.

Milo, his cat, wound around his ankles. Paul scooped the animal up and carried him to the bedroom. The little black cat squirmed until he was dumped onto the bed. Just as he did every night, he curled up between the pillows and tucked his kinked tail under his body. Paul sighed. The moment he’d seen the matted bundle of black fur with the funny tail, he knew he needed to rescue the animal. Milo had become his best friend.

Ready to watch Cary Grant? Paul plopped onto the mattress beside the cat. For the last two years, he and Milo spent Halloween hiding out in the bedroom. They watched movies and simply existed until the clock struck midnight signaling the beginning of November. He refused to face the world on Halloween.

I recorded a marathon, he said and patted the cat. The classic movie channel had five of Grant’s movies playing last weekend. He knew better than to expect a reply from Milo. The feline had already drifted off to sleep. He curled up so tight he looked more like a stuffed animal or a pillow, rather than a live cat.

Got it. Shut up and start the movie. Paul aimed the remote in the general direction of the television. Soon trick-or-treat along the streets of Cridersville would start. He liked passing out candy, but didn’t have the heart to deal with grubby hands and grouchy kids. The
