Broken Wolf Broken Bones - D. Black Isiordia

    Some say the devil

    child ran & fell

    Some say it jumped

    No one could tell

Red was the first color I knew

it was the color of pain.

black purple and blue were next

they were the colors that hid

under long sleeves on a hot summer day

    yellow meant wet sheets

in the middle of the night

          but green . . .

    green was my favorite

it was the color of her eyes

green like the color of pines

Maybe I’m slowly turning into stone

    Bones heavy not my own

Maybe I’ll end up unheard unknown

Just a name on a gravestone

    Water was for drowning

    Fire was for burning

    Wind knocked over

    Earth shook

There was no standing still with you

Heavy darkness swept over you as a child

In return you created your own

Now you fight about which darkness is darker

Maybe you should ask the white jars you poured it into

    My skin soaked up

    The black and blue

    And turned it into ink

    I’m trying

    I’m crying

    Stop lying

    I’m dying

    She drew into herself

    night after night

like a flower that refused the sun

She didn’t even need the rain

    my god how you’ve changed

    my god how you haven’t

    She rescued birds

    because she knew

what it was like to have

                                                    her

                                                          wings
