    Her body was found in one of the seats on the upper deck of the ferry. It was the end of the day, the last run of the day, evening had set in, and Ernie was making his rounds, cleaning the decks, picking up trash when he saw her. He thought she was sleeping. Her head was resting against the window; her eyes were closed, and she looked, as he later told police, quite peaceful and comfortable. He had seen this before, people who worked in the city, having a long week, rough days, arguments and deadlines, they get on the ferry and the day releases them. They are lulled by the rocking of the ferry and, in the thirty-six minutes it takes to go from downtown to the outer island, it is easy to fall asleep. He looked at her and decided that he would let her sleep another ten minutes while he threw away the trash and closed the ferry down for the night.

    He took the green plastic bags full of paper cups and sandwich wrappers off the ferry and walked slowly across the parking lot to the large dumpsters. He stopped halfway and lit a cigarette. It was the end of spring and the nights were warm but still, the cool breeze came off the water, and that was enough
