    He sang Be-Bop-a-Lula, a one-time standard for anyone doing an open mic night in the hot city. A throwback, a harken to, a sign of respect to the roots of music birthed in the side streets, beer joints, back rooms and makeshift studios. He stood alone, a battered guitar his only company. She liked that, his singularity. The wave now was small garage bands crowded onto the postage stamp-sized stage, slamming out originals that were not very original. Amps too loud, lyrics unintelligible and a serious lack of musicianship. But this boy was different.

    He played with easy skill, nothing flashy, but it was obvious, to her at least, that he knew what he was doing. His voice was clear and sharp. He didn’t try to do an Elvis impression, didn’t try to be Buddy Holly and yet, in his voice there were hints of them both.

    There was a respect in him that belied his years. There was a tone to his voice that gave reverence to the roots of the rhythms he strummed. Above all, there was a presence about him that was captivatingly sexy. This, among his other qualities, gave her pause.
