It was her place. She has, I think, a great place.

The walls are white, painted over stone or brick, so they have a texture, not only to the touch but, a visual texture as well. Her furniture is simple but elegant, and when I was there, I had this feeling I was in a Jane Austen book or one of those Merchant Ivory films. You know, they are lush and rich, and everything feels. Actually, I find, in those films, the things, the walls, the furniture, all of the things, seem to feel more than the people do. Maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, I was on the bed. It was a large, steel-framed bed. Great mattress, white linens, thick and soft. The windows of her place are floor to ceiling, and they look out onto, I have no idea what. Seriously, how long have I lived in this city and I have no idea what the views are. The river, yes but, it didn’t look like the river I know or a view I have ever seen in my life. Again, like a film or a post card. Something just a finger’s tip away
