The Water Diet and the Unseen Look

About this ebook
I had been seeing some men. Not frequently. Not seriously but, I had been seeing them. Trouble was, none of them were seeing me. They looked at me. They were sometimes with me, engaged with me but, I never felt like I was being seen. I wondered what it would be like. I wondered if any man would ever stop and really see me.
Seth did. I thought and then I thought no... He’s seeing past me. Is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life?

When I was younger, just a small girl, I remember my father going on a water diet. My father was a blue-collar, hard-drinking, gruff, working man and suddenly there he was, standing in the kitchen, leaning against the counter while my mother and I sat at the table eating our dinner and he… Well, he was drinking glass after glass of water. When I asked why, he told me that he had gained some weight, and it was causing trouble with his knees.
My father had played hockey as a kid and done some damage to his knees. Not being wealthy, the knee problem was ignored, and the pain was soothed with liquor and life went on. So, when he told me he was taking care of his ailing knees, I said okay and continued to eat my mac and cheese.
My mother made some comment about him wanting to look good for... But my father shot her a look before she finished, and it faded into the recesses of memory where such things fade, sometimes to be lost, sometimes to be jarred awake by the most innocuous of events. A glass falling. A vision in a window. A whispered phone call at the other end of the room.
