About this ebook
2017 Arthur Ellis Best First Novel Award Finalist
It’s too cold to go missing in northern B.C., as a mismatched team of investigators battle the clock while the disappearances add up.
A popular rockabilly singer has vanished in the snowbound Hazeltons of northern B.C. Lead RCMP investigator David Leith and his team work through the possibilities: has she been snatched by the so-called Pickup Killer, or does the answer lie here in the community, somewhere among her reticent fans and friends?
Leith has much to contend with: rough terrain and punishing weather, motel-living and wily witnesses. The local police force is tiny but headstrong, and one young constable seems more hindrance than help — until he wanders straight into the heart of the matter.
The urgency ramps up as one missing woman becomes two, the second barely a ghost passing through. Suspects multiply, but only at the bitter end does Leith discover who is the coldest girl of all.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I applied for a copy of this book as I live in Northern BC (although not that far north) and always enjoy a read that takes place at a location I am familiar with. The book was much better than I had hoped! A good, suspenseful story with great characters. It is a 'meaty' read. Highly recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Death and darkness in Northern BCA missing singer and a killer dubbed the 'pickup killer' already having claimed three lives.A complex, edgy and dark read with some moments of unexpected rays of light. Featuring a cast of the lost and found. Lost on their path and found in many other ways. Of being on the brink, of trusting and not trusting feelings. Of friendships and family--working together and gone awry.Happenings as stark as the surrounding country of northern British Columbia--beyond Port Rupert, towards Hazleton before Smithers, a four hour drive away complete with logging roads and mountains in the depth of winter. (I looked at a map to get a further understanding of the area and distances. By the way, there's a very good reason why most of the map is white! Having flown into Port Rupert and caught the Marine Highway ferry north I do understand the isolation and 'tyranny' of distance.) The writing really pulled me in as the chill of the landscape settled into my bones.Seen through the eyes of two different RCMP officers; a recovering injured big city detective, now a cop in the small western Canadian community of Smithers and the lead detective from Prince Rupert.Dion, whose head injury has left gaps in his communication and thought abilities, but who's intuition sometimes cuts clearly through the clouds of fog, and David Leith, who has performance anxiety when Detective Sergeant Bosko from the Serious Crime Unit, joins the team investigating the disappeared 'hillbilly princess,' Kiera Rilkoff whose star was on the rise. The behaviours of the rugged small town inhabitants come under the microscope as the team race to find the singer, as do the prejudices and behaviours of the various members of this task force, as they come together. A complex and fascinating crime story.A NetGalley ARC
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5RCMP investigator David Leith is called to the Hazeltons in northern British Columbia when a popular young rockabilly singer vanishes. Leith has been working the case of the Pickup Killer for a couple of years and it looks like this disappearance could be another victim. He finds himself working with a small insular team of investigators who might be too familiar with the area and the suspects. The head of the local force has trouble believing that anyone she knows could be involved. Also posted to the area is Dion who was previously a detective in a more prestigious city until a car accident killed his partner, left Dion in a coma for six days, and has left with with a brain injury. Apparently, no one in his new office read his files because he is thought to be some combination of stupid and incompetent by his supervisor and by Leith. I enjoyed the parts from his point of view which seemed like good descriptions of the issues people with brain injuries suffer. One moment his is bright and insightful and the next he is confused and bewildered. He has useful insights to the case but his reputation and the petty behavior of another officer almost lead to disaster. This was a gritty police procedural that really showed that police work is a matter of putting together massive amounts of information much of it obtained from people who are lying. I enjoyed the mixed assortment of characters who were witnesses or suspects. While this story is complete and has a satisfying conclusion, there are still questions I want answered especially about Dion and his past.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A disjointed and too-long mystery with two main characters and several plots, none of which gel. A talented Vancouver detective, brain-damaged in the collision which killed his partner, returns to duty as a constable in a small town in the northern part of the province where he hopes to have the chance to recover and prove himself capable of returning to his old post. He gets pulled into a serial kidnapping and murder case as a temp and proceeds to irritate everyone around him, none of whom understand his situation (the commanding officer neglected to read the fine print accompanying his transfer). The person most angered by his inability to concentrate is the man running the search for the serial killer, and he's a pretty unpleasant fellow. These are the characters from whose points of view the story is primarily told. The problem is, the reader can't really relate to either of them, and the frequent misunderstandings detract from the suspense. The story has no clear arc, with numerous points at which the story seems to be ready to climax and then backs away, wallowing towards the next likely conclusion. Exhausting. This seems like it is set to begin a series with these two characters, but I can't say I'll watch for the next installment.
